Band History
Formed in 2005 by a group of friends in Oak Cliff, Texas – the band was originally known as ‘B Street Blues’ – named after a Beatrice Street studio where they practiced. The founding members of the band were all Oak Cliff residents:
· Richard Akers, Rhythm Guitar (Kessler Woods)
· Bill Ford, Vocals (Kessler Park)
· Ben James, Drums (Stevens Park Estates)
· David Lyles, Bass (East Kessler)
Originally, the group got together simply to jam and with the thought that they might play once in a while for their friends at parties. However, soon it became apparent that this pastime was growing into something more and the group invited Matt Piper (the first non Oak Cliff member) to join and add ‘flash’ in the form of hot guitar licks to compliment the musical foundation of the group. B Street Blues began playing regularly at Oak Cliff community events and had gigs at The Stoneleigh P and Lee Harveys.
In January 2008, Doug May (who was born in the Chester Clinic Hospital on Lancaster Avenue near Kiest) joined as Harmonica player, adding more blues tone to the group. In March of 2008, Matt Piper left the band and was replaced by Mike Martin (Lead Guitar). Soon after, David Lyles left and was replaced by Bobby Deen (Bass Guitar). Mike and Bobby both had professional music backgrounds and brought the musical level of the group up significantly. At that point, things really started to take off and the band re-branded as “Bona Fide Blues (sm)”.
In the summer of 2008 the band participated in a national ‘battle of the bands’ competition sponsored by Adobe, Inc. for the Advertising Week annual conference and made it to the finals where they played for a large crowd at the NYC Times Square Nokia Theatre. The finals were held ‘American Idol’ style with a panel of judges, including Phil Ramone, legendary music producer (Bob Dylan, BB King, Madonna, Paul McCartney and many others) who stated “Boys, I LOVE the blues and you guys brought it home”.
Upon returning from the New York competition, the band felt more confident and had the bug to perform live on a regular basis. Both Eno’s Pizza Tavern and Jack’s Backyard were opening up in Oak Cliff and the band was the first to play at these two new Oak Cliff venues. They have been playing regular monthly gigs there since. They also play many corporate parties (Brinker International, SMU and others).
Recently, Bobby Deen left the band and was replaced by Tom Watkins (Bass Guitar), another Oak Cliff Resident (Stevens Park).
The band respects Oak Cliff’s musical legacy – T-Bone Walker, Freddie King Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughn, Darrell Nulisch and draw influences from many types of blues artists. They play many blues favorites by hometown heroes along with a growing list of songs that they penned themselves.
