About

BLATANT DISREGARD

Attempting to achieve musical exploration through improvisation, Lake Worth bassist Mark Braun formed a rotating ensemble called Blatant Disregard in 1995.

Recruiting West Palm Beach drummer Bill Meredith, with whom Braun played in the alternative rock band JasPlazma, the bassist was trying to use the improv elements that crept into his previous group's live shows - plus transfuse the spontaneous nature of jazz with the most powerful aspects of rock, as hinted at in the play on words ("jazz plasma").

The fusion has resulted in a trans-county collective of South Florida talent. The rotation has been featured in forms from trio to quintet. Percussionists from Palm Beach to Dade County, and a number of South Florida guitarists have filtered through during the band's twelve-year run.

In three different incarnations, Blatant Disregard appeared on the televised "Danny Jessup Show" in 1996, on the 1998 compilation CD "Big Bang" (available locally through Cryptogram Records or at the band's live shows), and as the opening act for international saxophonist Warren Hill in 2002 at West Palm Beach's annual SunFest.

Blatant Disregard's 2002 lineup featured Braun, Meredith and Kornicks with guitarist John Smotherman and keyboardist Al Ramsey, a quintet that held monthly court at Lake Worth's Bamboo Room for all of 2002. Styles at any given gig range between the Woodstock-era Santana attack of Kornicks and Meredith; Braun's Miles Davis-influenced bass lines, Smotherman's collage of Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Ramsey's modern blend of Herbie Hancock and Weather Report's Joe Zawinul.  The quintet sometimes invited area musicians to sit in for John Coltrane-like improv jaunts, or actual composed pieces ("All Blues") by major influences like Davis, giving a blatant transfusion to the South Florida music scene.

The current lineup includes Braun, Meredith, and Smotherman as the trio version of Blatant Disregard. They have performed at the West Palm Beach Green Market, Palm Beach Gardens and Port St.Lucie Green Markets, ‘Marine Max' boat sales special events, various private functions and fundraisers for Inspirit, a local charity organization.
