HISTORY OF BING or BINGOGRAPHY
Bing Satellites is an ambient/shoegaze musician, producer, remixer and DJ from Manchester, UK.The sole member, Brin, started playing in punk and indie bands at school in the borders of Scotland in the mid 80's. He sang and played a variety of instruments in a whole raft of notable but unsuccessful bands in Scotland and Manchester, including Ecosse Tourists Say No To Big Orange Worm and Braxton Hicks (one of several bands that went by that name) until the early 90's when he became dissillusioned with his output and aggrevated by other musicians and their oversized egos. During this time, a prolonged illness meant Brin was also unable to work for extended periods. However, always tinkering and experimenting and forever out of step with what was "cool", a chance hearing of 'A Strangely Isolated Place' by german ambient shoegazer Ulrich Schnauss in a second record shop in Manchester reignited Brin's love of music. Schnauss seemed to be playing the sounds in his head - he was making electronic music that was melancholic and atmospheric, not the cold hard techno or dark trip hop that surrounded it but something warm and emotional.
After several pseudonyms, Brin settled on Bing Satellites (from a sound from his the song of the same name) - it was spacey and whimsical enough to carry his real sound and new found confidence. Over the years, no matter what sort of music he had tried to create, it more often than not ended up sounding atmospheric and melancholic. It now seemed there was an audience for this sort of music and so he borrowed a sequencer and synthesizer from his brother Scotty (himself a DJ, infamous around Manchester) and set to work in his newly named studio Mission Control or something (MCos).
The unofficial release of three ambient DJ mixes and the connection to his brother Scotty led to Bing Satellites radio show, first broadcast on RebelRadio.FM on 18th November 2007 and continuing to this day, featuring interviews and guest DJ sets and playing a wide variety of ambient, shoegaze and experimental music from around the world. This, amongst other things, led to Bing Satellites remixing tracks by other artists such as Dibaba, Leni Ward, Kurosawa and Gloworld.
25th April 2008 saw the first official release by Bing Satellites - 'Summer Night' a 2CD ambient album of mellow ambience. The first CD contains six tracks with very little drums or percussion - one exception being 'Messages' which was recorded live at Bing's studio MCos in Manchester. The second CD is entirely taken up by an 70 minute excerpt from an extended experimental piece known as 'Music for Horns No.1 in G major'. The album was released on Bing Satellites very own BFW Recordings label (BFW standing for Big Fucking Wow), set up to release his music and video work for free via the internet.
The follow up, an EP entitled 'Forever' was released on 26th November 2008, again through BFW Recordings. It shows Bing's new found confidence as a producer and keyboard player. Like 'Summer Night' it is available to download free. A month later, the video for the title track was released.
A further EP 'The Night Sky EP' is due for release in early 2009.
