The Big Orkney Song Project is a two year project set up to collect, catalogue and record Orkney songs and run by Orkney Singers. About

Welcome to Orkney Singers and The Big Orkney Song Project, which is a two year project set up to collect, catalogue and record Orkney songs. We will be creating the Big Orkney Song Collection, which everyone can have free access to. It will be kept in the Orkney Library and Archive. Our hope is to reinvigorate a song tradition in Orkney and preserve our rich and diverse song heritage.

You will see lots of us over the next two years, firstly at our SongShare events – come to hear, learn and speak about Orkney song. At each SongShare there will be a free concert and workshop of Orkney songs and the opportunity to share and donate any Orkney song material you have – old or new. Alternatively, just come and see us for a cup of tea and a chat. We are also visiting care homes and day centres.

Later in the project you can join us for workshops of Orkney Song, both in schools and in the community where we will give back what we have found.

All of the events are free of charge and everyone is welcome.

If you would like to get involved, help at SongShares or if you want to share, loan or donate anything, please get in touch!

Most of the songs on this page were recorded at our SongShares by the workshop singers - and were either only the first or second time the workshop had ever sung the song the whole way through!
