Bio
"As a songwriter's songwriter, Art Linton's music and wordsmithery embodies the best of indie music without relinquishing accessibility. He is as comfortable in poetic Elvis Costello territory as he is in David Allen Coe's stomping grounds. Come hear an Atlanta original. Read more about Art at http://www.myspace.com/artlinton " - Martha Shockey

ART LINTON is a native son of Atlanta, GA. He was one of the first acts to play at the Downstairs music club/restaurant, which was a small but eccentric part of the Athens music scene. Art performed his songs solo there on acoustic guitar, sometimes with harmonica and of course, harmonica rack. He would later perform at the Uptown Lounge, the Georgia Theatre, Rockfish Palace, the Flying Buffalo, Charle McGruders, the Lighthouse and the Foundry as part of an acoustic guitar duo with singer-songwriter Mike Robinson. Mike and Art opened for the legendary John Prine at the Georgia Theatre. They also opened once for a group called "The Kentucky Headhunters," and that's when Art made the "mistake" of jokingly playing the first few notes of "Sweet Home Alabama." The hostile headhunter audience demanded they finish the song, which they did. Mike and Art also performed at the Second Annual Athens Music Festival and at the 1990 Human Rights Festival in downtown Athens.
Art helped start a rock band called Seedmachine with singer-songwriter, guitarist & drummer Steve Milsap (formerly of the Smash Fantastic). Art and Steve worked together at John Keane Studios in Athens, with Keane and producer/bassist David Barbe (Mercyland, Sugar, Buzzhungry, etc.) recording and playing on some of the album. Former Mercyland drummer Joel Suttles and the super talented and versatile drummer Sean O'Rourke also joined them in the studio, as did the illustrious bassist extrordinare David Webb and the fantastic keyboardist Tom Grose. Seedmachine also recorded at Exocet Studios in Atlanta (with producers/engineers Bruce Bennett and Geno Montgomery) where they finished their 16-song album project.
The final product, Hard World, saw a limited cassette release locally in Athens and received good radio airplay. Seedmachine also performed shows at The Georgia Theatre and The City Bar in Athens and at The Wreck Room and Sylvia's Art of This Century in Atlanta.
Art eventually left Athens and Seedmachine. He moved back to Atlanta and landed a job as a writer and associate producer at CNN Headline News, where he worked for several years. He completed his own CD entitled "Enemy Lines." (see Enemy Lines website). Art produced Enemy Lines at Exocet Studios in Atlanta, Georgia with the help of co-producers and engineers Scott Patton (Sugarland, Richard Bicknell), Bruce Bennett and Geno Montgomery. Art sings all lead and background vocals, and plays lead and rhythm electric guitar and acoustic guitar on all tracks. Guitar-player Scott Patton makes a solo appearance as lead guitarist on "Anything Goes," and serves as a second rhythm guitarist on a few other tracks. Bass player extraordinaire David Webb (Sugarland, etc.) also helped flesh out Art's songs in the studio. Several top-notch drummers helped Art with his solo project, including former Aleka's Attic (with River Phoenix) and Big White Undies drummer extrordanaire Josh Greenbaum (now in Maui, lucky bum), the well-known Atlanta drummer Yonrico Scott (Derek Trucks Band, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Yonrico Scott Band, among others), as well as super-bad, world famous drummers Sean O'Rourke (seanorourke.com, Sugarland, Mother's Finest, Aquarium Rescue Unit, and many others), Michael Grando (Blueground Undergrass. etc.) and Mike Mulholland. Other notable Atlanta music scene players appearing on the album include the talented keyboardist Tom Grose. Since then he has made appearances at Java Monkey, Kavarna, Bhojanic, Eddie's Attic and the Freight Room in Decatur, as well as other local Atlanta music venues.

"Events unfold so unpredictably, so unfairly, human happiness does not seem to be included in the design of creation. It is only we, with our capacity to love that give meaning to the indifferent universe. And yet, most human beings seem to have the ability to keep trying and even try to find joy from simple things, like their family, their work, and from the hope that future generations might understand more."- Professor Levy, whose suicide note read, "I've gone out the window."
"Life is not a problem but a mystery. For science life is a problem; for religion it is a mystery. A problem can be solved, a mystery cannot be solved. Mystery can be lived, but cannot be solved.... We can live mysteries, we can become one with them, we can lose ourselves in them, we can have a totally different existence, the very quality changes--but nothing is solved, because nothing can be solved. All that appears to be solvable, all that appears to be knowable, is only because we are taking it in fragments. If we look at the whole then nothing is knowable. And we go on pushing the mystery backwards. A step ahead, we push the mystery. All our answers are temporary, and they appear to be answers only to lazy minds. If you have a penetrating mind you will come again upon the same mystery--just the mystery has been pushed back, a step back. Just behind the answer the question is hidden. You have simply created a facade of an answer, just a curtain on the mystery."
"If you can feel the distinction, then from the very beginning religion takes a different shape and different color and a different view. The whole perspective changes... Life is there. It has been a mystery and will remain a mystery. Whatsoever we do we cannot demystify it, because to be mysterious is the very quality of it. It is not something accidental that life is mysterious. It is not something which can be separated from it--it is the very life itself. So, to me, the more you enter into the mysterium, into the mysterious, the more religious you become."
"When you can feel a deep ignorance, when you become aware that you don't know anything, you have come to the right balancing point from where the door of the mystery can open. If you know, then the door is closed; if you are ignorant, fully alert that you don't know anything, the door suddenly opens. The very feeling that you don't know opens the door.... Ignorance is innocent, knowledge is always a sort of cunning, cleverness. If you can use your knowledge to be ignorant again, then you have used it rightly. This is the only use of all the scriptures, of all the knowledge.. to make you again childlike."
Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho) "The Book of the Secrets V: Discourses on Vigyana Bhairava Tantra"
