John Mieras was born in Italy and raised in Washington state. He now lives and is based out of Colorado. He was educated to be a music teacher but is above all a musician and artist. That distinction has informed much of what John is and does as a writer and a performer. He likes to say that he's not a master of anything but rather simply enjoys hearing and singing a melody or harmony and finding the crux of emotion that it represents. He is a singer.
John moved to Colorado to pursue a masters degree in Choral music, earning the degree sometime in the late '90s. During these undergrad & grad years John was heavily immersed in developing as a musician, educator, conductor, counter-tenor, French Horn player, guitarist, and songwriter. He performing regularly in choirs, orchestras and at the occasional open mic. This formal music training was augmented at the age of 13 by his beloved Grandpa who taught him to pick and sing bluegrass music, saying, "I taught Johnny 3 chords and he took it from there." John was on to writing his own songs the next day...
John was always interested in songwriting and patterned his early style after his heroes, Lennon & McCartney. Greats like Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead and new stars of indie folk, Bon Ivor, Anais Mitchell, and Storyhill have all had an influence on John's musical sensibilities and songwriting. The unique quality of John's music is in the synthesis of styles: classical, pop, bluegrass, folk, and indie-folk.
John finds inspiration from his family, students, songwriting friends, and the mysterious beauty of music.
