This is the focusing of several years of study in the field of Communications. A background that includes journalistic, promotional, and live on-air radio has given me the confidence to provide my active listening and critical thinking skills to the creation of my art. I actively watch a wide-variety of news, liberal as well as conservative, and listen for the themes. Bath salts killing our youth inspired a piece with one of my models in the tub, themed to look like a turn-of-the-century advertisement for Epsom salts.
Inspirations include Hunter Thompson. His dark view of the Nixon era, and the attitudes displayed towards the Vietnam-era “occupiers” has sent resonations that are impossible to ignore in today’s society. Max Brooks and his fabulous zombie survival guide gave me still more dark fodder that mixes with my urban decay field photography and textures to bring the pieces to life.
I clad these things in different genres that may resonate with you. Zombie hookers as addicts outside the “store” the Solanum is sold from. Solanum creates zombies, and in this world, that’s what the drug dealers are distributing on the streets. It’s toxic but you will forever look (sort of) how you look NOW. Sound like Botox to you? A little at first, just to prevent aging, and soon enough, you’re strung out on the chase after the fountain of youth. It’s not cheap, but your morals are…
Sometimes it’s COSPLAY. A new outfit inspires a themed shoot. Alice in Wonderland’s Red Queen has never looked so sinister as she does wrapped in PVC. But that’s when the artist says “the tattoo is real”, and you notice the off-center framing of the playing card…which is being held at the same time as a teacup filled with…who knows?
However, you’re asking yourself where it comes from; I take road trips to capture images for my own stock photography. The large chrome and glass building is the bubble on the German parliament building, with a storm front from Ocean Shores. But that’s just the technical. What are YOU seeing? What did YOU bring to the piece that it caught and held your eye?
“All art is at once surface and symbol Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril Those who read the symbol do so at their peril. It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors. Diversity of opinion about a work of art shows that the work is new, complex, and vital. When critics disagree the artist is in accord with himself. --Oscar Wilde
