Bola Abimbola was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. With a childhood full of singing and drumming in the traditions of the Yoruba and West African cultures, he debuted professionally as a songwriter and producer for some of Nigeria’s most successful young artists, including Saheed Osupa, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, Rasheed Ayinde and Shina Akani. His debut solo album, “Silifa Bamijo” (1987), was a runaway success, and launched Bola professionally as a talented and versatile singer and songwriter. In 1998, he released his second recording as a solo act, titled, “Buyanga“, which earned him the honors of “Artist of the Year” and “Best Video” at Nigeria’s Fame Awards in 1998. His talents also caught the attention of King Sunny Ade, who invited Bola to tour with him as a guest artist and backing vocalist. Bola appeared with KSA on his 1998 world tour, and at several WOMAD (World of Music, Arts, and Dance) festivals. King Sunny Ade’s recordings, “The Way Forward” and “Seven Degrees North“, also features Bola’s voice. Additional production and composition projects have included movie sound tracks, and both television and radio commercials.
Bola has also been recording and touring with Grammy Award-winning Nigerian percussionist Sikiru Adepoju (Babatunde Olatunji, Mickey Hart) and master conguero Giovanni Hidalgo (Tito Puente, Paul Simon, Eddie Palmieri).
Bola’s travels led him to live abroad in Seattle, Atlanta and Denver, 3 major US cities. While in the US, Bola was quickly signed to “Fast Horse Records”, who launched his debut US release, “Ara Kenge” in 2006. Acclaimed for its contemporary approach to West African music, the album was nominated for a Grammy Award in the World Music category. Bola formed a 13-piece band called “Wazobia” and performed at the highly acclaimed “Telluride Jazz Festival”, amongst other popular venues.
Faith City Records is the life-long dream and calling of Nigeria’s beloved vocalist and producer, Bola Abimbola. The label’s debut release, entitled “FREE“, is the long awaited praise and worship project that has been on Bola’s heart and mind for many years.
“FREE” features 13 original songs that demonstrate Bola’s unique ability to cross genres like Gospel, R & B, Reggae, African and contemporary pop music into a beautiful fusion of spirit lifting and inspired Christian music.
Bola is currently based in Atlanta, GA. While he does make frequent trips to Nigeria to support Faith City Music and Films, he is currently focused on the promotion of his new album, “FREE“. He also serves as a worship leader at his home church.
