batteryboy is an orchestral indie-folk group featuring multi-instrumentalists Cobey Rouse and Eric Carranza, violinist Leah Ottman and cellist Hilary James. Their unique blend of strings, Rhodes, slide guitar and 4-part harmonies on top of rhythmic guitar, ukulele and Velvet Underground-esque drum beats adds a tense, emotional soundtrack to Rouse's emotionally personal lyrics.
While comparisons have been made to Bon Iver, Cloud Cult, Sigur ros and others, there is something truly unique about the batteryboy sound that even the band can't quite put their finger on. But there's no doubt is that every word and every note comes straight from the heart.
“...reminiscent of Cloud Cult’s acoustic work and neo-folkies like Bon Iver.” - Andrea Swensson, 89.3 The Current
“batteryboy play pretty music. The melody of the sad songs, even without the lyrics, opens your heart. The reserved upbeat tempo of the joyous songs makes you smile wistfully. The harmony of the singers, the blending of violin... it’s just beautiful, grown up music.” - Ann Treacy, TC Daily Planet
“The band certainly manages to capture the raw anguish of that stunning live take in this gorgeous version (of minus one together).” -
ErikThompson, City Pages
“...incredibly intricate debut...a delicate collection of gentle folk orchestrations, a record filled with just as much sadness as it is with inspiration. Rouse’s vocals provide a strong backbone and the violin and harmonizing round out the songs perfectly.” - Natalie Gallagher, City Pages
“Rouse pours his heart into batteryboy’s eloquent lyrics; they come straight from the soul.” - Rift Magazine
“...music that inspires others to write” - Daisy Mazy, Sianet Radio
Originally a solo project by Cobey Rouse, batteryboy grew to include vocalist/violinist Shannon Frid (Cloud Cult) and keyboardist/guitarist Eric Carranza. Frid left the group in November 2013 to concentrate on Cloud Cult, and that's when Leah Ottman and Hilary James joined the group.
They recently released their debut album, “up for air” available on iTunes, Amazon, bandcamp and everywhere else.
