The 3rd Sunday String Band plays predominantly Old Time music -- Appalachian and Midwestern fiddle tunes and songs, as well as a selection of early County, Folk and Bluegrass songs.
The band began about eight years ago as a once a month jam held by a small group of students from the Old Town School of Folk Music. As time went on, we began meeting weekly to build up a repertoire. Being a very inclusive lot, our numbers soon swelled, and since then the group has included anywhere from ten to fifteen members at a given moment, playing various combinations of fiddles, mandolins, banjos, guitars, upright bass, flutes/whistles, Dobro, harmonica, and keyboards.
We've played a wide variety of events including private parties, weddings, farmer's markets, and fund raisers. Locations have included The Heartland Café, The RedLine Tap, No Exit Café, C.J. Arthur's (where we play every fifth Monday of the month), The Abbey Pub (in the pub), Save More Lounge, Musky Fest, The Illinois Storytelling Festival, WLUW radio, Myopic Books, various churches, medical facilities, and retirement homes, Northfield and Green City farmer's markets, The McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum, The Peninsula Hotel, The East Bank Club, various events at the Garfield Park Conservatory, and at Uncommon Ground on storytelling night. Various members also periodically play for local square and contra dances, and we've had fiddlers in the finals of the Midwest Fiddle Championship three of the last five years.
We currently have plans to record a CD whenever we can manage to get enough of us together long enough to do it.
