Bio
Sarah Vaughan, Agyei Akoto, Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Stevie Wonder, Al Jerreau; an incredibly eclectic list of amazing performers and a short sample of the long list of talented musicians that have inspired the music and soul of Akua Kyerematin, gifted vocalist, composer and arranger from Washington, D.C.
If you listen carefully you will still hear people exclaiming about Akua's senior recital in May 2000 at Howard University, where Akua majored in jazz vocals. There she was taught, coached and mentored by some exceedingly talented musicians, including world-renowned singer Kehembe V. Eichelberger, singer/drummer Grady Tate, and pianist Charles Covington. During a special workshop, jazz guitarist Russell Malone, complimented Akua on the beauty of her vocal instrument, cultivated since Akua began singing as a toddler. As a very young child she was exposed to world music from many different genres, which she believes gives her a significant edge in her musical expression. She carried her music through her undergraduate studies and into adulthood to become a professional musician by her early twenties. She has been teaching music for almost a decade, teaching all ages and various levels of classroom music studies as well as privately coaching voice.
Akua's musical roots run deeply through the blues, jazz and rhythm and blues. Her mother was a singer throughout high school and college, and her father is a renowned and seasoned musician and founder of a jazz ensemble that produced two albums during Akua's youth. Akua's style thus is a fluid and constantly evolving neo-soul conglomeration that stresses jazz and the blues.
Serendipity has allowed Akua to record with many different artists from many different genres, but hard work and determination have enabled Akua to make the most of what the Creator has blessed her with - a beautiful voice and a marvelous craft. Look closely at Akua Kyerematin today, for you will surely be hearing huge things about her tomorrow!
