Graffiti, B Boys, DJ’s-OH MY! In past years, Durham’s Hip Hop scene has been tossed to the wayside. It has been associated with violence and actions that clouded the actual “art” of Hip Hop. As of July 2012, two of Durham’s very own, have made it their mission to change this stigma. Award-winning artists, Professor Toon and The Real Laww have provided the community with what has been dubbed the DURM Hip Hop Summit, a one day musical festival that blankets the city of Durham in high quality Hip Hop; that can be experienced by all ages. The Durm Hip Hop Summit truly is a show within a show, illustrating the true meaning of Hip Hop and educating its audience on the foundation of Hip Hop roots. The event showcases the five pillars of Hip Hop: beat boxing, break dancing, emceeing, deejaying and graffiti, with a mission to revive the Hip Hop scene in Durham and the Triangle area. The DURM Hip Hop Summit started off from humble beginnings with just five performers, two DJ’s, one graffiti artist and one host all at one venue. Durham Mainstays, The Beast and Joshua Gunn headlined last year’s event and even a monsoon of torrential downpour couldn’t keep the DURM HIP Hop Summit from pulling a packed house. This year, the Summit brings a rocking end to the summer that’ll be sure to have many talking in the weeks to follow. On August 17th, the event will host on an even larger exhibit of Hip Hop madness, spreading across three venues-MotorCo., Casbah and Pinhook with headliners Kooley High, Young Swift, Actual Proof, and Kaze. Getting goose bumps already, huh?! Come jam out with ten talented performers and dance into the night with six DJs spinning their hottest mixes. Also presenting, k97.5’s renowned radio personalities Wade Banner, Brian Dawnson, and Nikki Nikole to keep the crowd hype. The showcase will even provide a safe and seamless transition between venues via the Bridge Bus! A good time and a good cause, because all graffiti pieces will be donated to the Durham School of the Arts, to inspire future Hip Hoppers. What’s in store for the future of the DURM Hip Hop Summit you ask? More, more, more! With hopes of inspiring growth by adding to the already sweet list of well known sponsors such as RedBull, The Art of Cool Project, Runaway and PBR, The Summit aspires to be on the same playing field as other music festivals like A3C, Hopscotch or Bonnaroo by adding more venues and even an outside performance with nationally known acts. This marks the turning point for Hip Hop in the triangle. It’s Hip Hop and Art at its finest, connecting people from all walks of life. For more information go to: http://DURMHipHopSummit.com
With the revived life of hip-hop back profoundly in the music industry, emerges an enthralling sensation of music, yet Realer. Based in Durham, North Carolina, the Realer Music Group has branded a wretched tagline into one of the Hip-Hop industries best underground duos. Trie Cartier: The wittiest of the two, and lyrical marksmen for the camp – reigns king of flow pattern and expressive illustration. Originally replicating the style of various artists he had been inspired by in past time has proven to ripen his own sound, enabling him to hold his own in a circle of the most accredited artists in the industry. Freshman: A direct energy ball. The fierceness of his delivery is what he’s most known for, compiled and inspired by his encounters with multi-cultural experiences. His purpose for greatness strays not far from any artist – the glory of generations, the pursuit of happiness. And what of production? Who needs it when the camp aligns positions for each of its personnel, starting with the artists themselves, and down to the sound board? Better known for his theory of “feel good music”, the Groove Theorist brings to life the art of southern production combined with aspects of super producers we all respect and love, that of which appear on each of the crew’s mixtape releases, Alcohol and Music, The Program, alongside their most recent and endorsed work – The Ron O’Neal EP. Vibrant melodies, heartfelt drum kicks, the combination makes for an experience unmatched. Gaining the reverence of names in music such as 9th Wonder, 88 Keys, Henny Tha Bizness, and DJ Drama – it’s safe to say the come up is now in close grips. Although the buzz is still growing, and the quality of Wreck-N-Crew’s work has yet to reach its peak with the support of engineer extraordinaire, Laphelle, Realer Music will continue to brand their product, not only within the Hip Hop and R&B community, but through every genre of music alike – ensuring the world maintains a standard of Realer music. As a support system for each other in this endeavor, the crew lives by one motto – simplistic yet essential, “My team is the steam that empowers my dreams.” I present, world – The Wreck-N-Crew. www.realermusicgroupnc.com www.soundcloud.com/wreck-n-crew www.reverbnation.com/wreckncrew
