About the Artist

Called "the quintessential Austin DIY artist" by famed Austin disc jockey Charlie Martin, Walter Ehresman relocated to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in Feb. 2015. A prolific songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and recording artist, he is equally at home presenting a delicate acoustic ballad in an intimate club as he is busting out screaming lead guitar with a full rock band on a roaring stage. However, he’s just as likely to be holed up in his Snipe Bog Studios, surrounded by odd gear and recording strange, unclassifiable experimental music at 4am with a big grin on his face. The consistent factor is a restless musical spirit, always looking for something new, coupled with fearlessly honest and sophisticated lyric-writing. Walter Ehresman's 24th solo album, "Adentro del Volcan! (Into the Volcano!......a concept album)" is his first "concept album" and was released June 15, 2026. The concept is that a lone alien crashes his ship into the swamps of Louisiana and is unable to return home. Using his powers to blend in, he embarks on Dante-eque travels around a US (and beyond) in the grips of late-stage capitalism. Styles on the album range from Lou Reed-style rockers to alternate tuning singer/songwriter fare to Americana to flamenco to samba groove to electronica to Steely Dan vibes to punk to progressive to heartbreaking futuristic ballads......all in service to telling the story. After releasing his heavy music album (under the name The Last Chingon, titled "Heat Death Coda") in June of 2025, for his 23rd solo album Ehresman returned to his genre-hopping ways with "Collapse, Cha Cha Cha." Styles here include crunchy rock, surf, desert noir, ska, singer/songwriter fare, and an interesting array of older musical rhythms such as musette and even a cha cha (befitting the album title). Throughout, the music demonstrates Ehresman's continuing development as a songwriter, musician, singer and producer, with his hard-earned world view brought into sharp focus by the devestating right wing emergency in the United States. His songwriter's pen spares no guilty party in chronicling both the fascist decline in his home country and those he sees as responsible for it. The emotion throughout is gut-wrenching, and the emotional toll of the American collapse on Ehresman is evident all through the album--the outrage always tinged with sadness and small moments of hope. He tells us that the new release "is a concept album in that the first half can be your soundtrack for The Party At the End of the World, while the back half is what you can play as you’re hungover the next morning, watching the Big Collapse." Regarding "Heat Death Coda." Ehresman remembers "I got the idea to write and record an album of all 'heavy music'.....This was partially inspired by my desire to see if I could do it, doing all the instruments and vocals myself, and partially by the continuous onslaught of right wing CEO-fascism in the US....I could picture some dark music to go with the dark lyrics I was being inspired to write." Ehresman's 2023’s "Cassandra, Cursed" album demonstrates the increasing influence of Latin music in his sound and the overall growth in the sophistication of his arrangements. "All the songs for this album came to me in dreams," he tells us. "I'd had a few over the years that came that way, but this is the first time to have a run of 12 of them in a row.....I don't know what it signifies, but I'll take it." Political/social commentary has remained a pervasive lyrical theme. "My life-long quest has been trying to figure out why people do what they do," Ehresman has said. "Politics seems to be just another manifestation of human psychology...How someone votes is a reflection of their character...Not all of my songs are about politics, but all of them are about the human condition." But just as much lyrical time is given to the inner turmoils and dilemmas we all share.....love, uncertainty, despair, pending mortality. The commonality in his songwriting is a deep love of what humanity can be, coupled with a deep disappointment when we don't live up to our better selves. All Ehresman’s solo and band albums are stylistically diverse, going from rock to reggae to ballad to funk to classical-esque to surf to world music to experimental, for example, all within the same record. Tracks are strung together with a dynamic arc similar to a novel, and somehow it just works. “I just take the ideas as they come,” he says, “I’ll usually get an inspiration that includes all the lyrics, music and feel of the song, and then the challenge becomes seeing how close to that I can get in the studio….but often the quirks and limitations of my self-taught playing/singing/production skills send the song in an interesting new direction that I wouldn’t have thought of initially…..and that’s pretty cool, too.” Ehresman’s catalogue is available on Bandcamp at: https://walterehresman.bandcamp.com/
