“Musician Larry Vannatta encourages teachers to let kids express themselves Though Milo-area-based country musician Larry Vannatta graduated from County Central High School (CCHS) in 1978, he received his first school award last Thursday at the sixth annual Palliser Wall of Fame induction ceremony. “I know it took me 50 years — I’ve never gotten an award in school, but I finally got it,” Vanatta said during his speech at the ceremony. More than 900 Palliser staff, friends and families were in attendance at the ceremony, which was part of the Opening Day Celebration for Palliser Regional Schools at Vulcan’s Cultural-Recreational Centre. A self-taught musician and songwriter, Vannatta said in his speech that music became his creative outlet primarily because it allowed him to express himself in ways that he never could in mandatory school essays. “As a songwriter, it is my role to express myself emotionally with music,” he said. “Let those kids in school express themsel”

“Song Writers Assocaition of Canada Larry Vannatta has been writing songs for over 25 years. He began his first band in the 90s, “Straight, Clean and Simple.” Around the same time, his music was introduced into the European Country Music Market, which proved to be successful, as he was kept busy touring. Larry Vannatta, whose single "Country Junkie" was recently charting top spot in the European Country Music Association (ECMA) for four weeks, has been nominated for three awards. The Vulcan County resident's most recent album, Red Neck Thoroughbred, has been nominated as Album of the Year alongside other country talent like George Strait, Brad Paisley, and Reba McIntyre. The second nomination is for band of the year, with Zac Brown and Lady Antebellum also among the nominees. The final nomination is for artist of the year, who among the 10 other nominees are Paisley, Strait and Miranda Lambert. "It's rewarding to get nominated in those categories," especially along with such known country names, Vannatta said.”
