

Ulterior Motive
Ulterior Motive is a modern jazz band from San Antonio, Texas. Steve Mohacey grew up in San Antonio, Texas and began playing saxophone at age 12. He was a member of the Disneyland All-American College Band and was one of the Music Directors for Sea World of Texas. He taught high school band in East Texas, and then joined the Army band. During his time in the US Army, Steve played music all over the world. He has played for numerous dignitaries, including President Ronald Reagan, President Bill Clinton, and President George W. Bush, the President of the Republic of Korea, and the Prime Ministers of Japan and Iraq. He was the saxophone instructor at the Armed Forces School of Music, teaching all Army, Navy, and Marine Corps saxophonists. His jazz quintets in the Army were recognized as being the premier small groups for the entire Army band system. Steve’s compositions and arrangements are still currently used by all of the service bands. Steve retired from the US Army after 22 years of service. He currently teaches music for San Antonio ISD, and is highly active in the Texas jazz music scene. Steve has played with Peter Erskine, Bobby Shew, Bob Mintzer, Adam Nussbaum, Diane Schuur, Richie Cole, Charlie Daniels, Jerry Jeff Walker, Tito Puente, Jr., Patsy Torres, Butch Miles, and Jackie King. His recording credits include “Mo in Seoul” with the Taste of Jazz quintet, “Monk Munch” with The Four Spot quartet, and “Hip Hop Nation” with People Crew, and “Bagdad Blues” with the Josh Distefano Quartet. He has also played several Broadway shows, including Bye, Bye Birdie, Five Guys Named Mo and Miss Liberty. Television credits include the PBS special “Mirror Ballet”, a four part jazz ballet. His influences are Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Bob Mintzer, Bob Malach, and John Coltrane. Vibist and percussionist Joe Caploe has worked and recorded with Bobby McFerrin, Roscoe Mitchell (Art Ensemble of Chicago), Jeff Coffin (Bela Fleck, Dave Matthews Band), Claire Fischer, Babatunde Olatunji, Music Theatre Group of New York, Swapan Chauduri, Rare Earth, Todd Phillips, Tom Taylor and Chester Thompson. He is founder of Nextagem, an independent CD label with six releases. Before relocating to San Antonio in 2010 he served as Director of Percussion & Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin Platteville. He currently is a professor at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, teaching drum set, percussion and a Latin Jazz Combo. Active in the San Antonio music scene Caploe can be heard playing with the San Antonio Jazz Orchestra, Primetime and South Texas Jazz as well as other local artists. His major concert appearances include the Monterey Jazz Festival, Concord Jazz Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival, Israel Festival(Jerusalem),Festival de Theatre(Montreal), Day of the Drum Festival(San Francisco), Watts Day of the Drum Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, America Festival and Wisconsin Public Radio. Jean-Philippe Rominger is active as a classical and jazz guitarist. His credentials include are numerous. He performed in France, Germany, Switzerland, and Belgium as member of different modern jazz groups. Jean-Philippe has performed with Diana Schurr, John Faddis, Charlie Rouse, Bunky Green, Babbik Reinhardt, Bireli Lagrene, Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis and many more. Jean-Philippe is currently touring with Donald Braswell of “America’s Got Talent” fame. Jean-Philippe is also has been featured in a number of recording projects. Some of his compositions have been published. Jean-Philippe is a member of TMEA. Jean-Philippe currently holds the position of Orchestra and Guitar Director Jefferson High School and is an adjunct faculty member of St. Philip’s College and Northeast Lakeview College. Jim Kalson has been a professional bass player since the age of thirteen. Early in his career, he was a member of The Kalson Family band that toured the country. They were managed and booked by the Lavender Blake Agency and shared the stage with artists such as George Jones, Tammy Wynette, The Statler Brothers and Ronnie Milsap, Jim started his solo career at 18, and has been playing jazz and contemporary Pop music since. He has performed extensively with jazz artists Paul English, Joe LoCascio and David Caceres, and has been featured with renowned jazz professionals including Gordon Goodwin, Bob Mintzer, Jon Faddis, Ndugu Chancler, Paquito D'Rivera and Kirk Whalum. Jim has spent his time in the orchestra pit, as well, with touring Broadway musicals such as Grease, Menopause The Musical and A Chorus Line. He has had numerous San Antonio Symphony Pops performances with artists such as Martin Short, Joel Grey, Vicki Carr, Patsy Torres and High Class Brass. He performed in 2007 at La Villita Assembly Hall in San Antonio, Texas with legendary drummer Buddy Miles. Jim is currently touring with Donald Braswell of “America’s Got Talent” fame. Jim served as an Electric Bass Instructor at U.T.S.A for twelve years and has been an instructor with Saint Mary's University since 2002. Dean Macomber is an internationally recognized drummer, producer, educator and clinician. He's received numerous world-wide honors for his ability to perform on drum set in all idioms of music. His support of artists is wide ranging and always in demand. Dean was the winner of the prestigious "Best Unsigned Drummer in the Nation" competition sponsored by Modern Drummer Magazine. He also was the featured artist with one of the best jazz ensembles in the world, "The Airmen of Note". He's been the engine for numerous pop, country & rock artists spanning 25+yrs in the industry.
