"Tony Low, a veteran power-pop artist and New York transplant, played old and new selections from a deep and spellbinding catalogue..... Even performed with only an acoustic guitar for accompaniment, it was easy to imagine a Phil Spector-like wall of sound..... but more recent material displayed the same pop song-craft enhanced by a more mature sense of lyricism." Jordan Green - Triad City Beat Tony Low (born Anthony Michael Steen) grew up in Mamaroneck, NY, a town in downstate New York, not far from NYC. He started learning and performing music at an early age. Tony got a taste of fame with The Cheepskates, the renowned garage/psych/power-pop band from NYC which he formed in the early 1980’s. Since going solo in 1998, Tony has released an impressive array of albums. He has performed throughout the USA, plus Liverpool, England and western Europe. His songs capture a timeless spirit and energy, of plaintive beauty and imagery. The sound is a sonic cocktail of Neil Young and Big Star. Tony’s newest album is Really Real (released in early 2024). An extended EP of six songs recorded and produced by Doug Davis of Flytrap Music in Winston-Salem, NC, it features catchy and trippy tunes which deal with the Covid pandemic (Big Warm, Really Real), the fall of modern man (Sapien), vivid, psychedelic impressionism (Smokeflower), tragic loss (Garden of Shambles) and religious ecstasy on a NYC subway of all places (Tony actually witnessed a woman going through this back in his NYC days) (Rapture on the No. 7). The songs provide a sublime listening experience and are sure to enhance any music lover’s day. Check out Really Real, it’s really cool!
