“The Verge & Mary by Mark Suppanz Containing three members of 1980's power popsters The Melody Kings, this NYC foursome (who insist their moniker is not sacrilege, chosen only when bassist Mary Noecker joined; still that didn't stop them from putting a picture of the blessed mother on their CD cover, and adding the tongue-in-cheek title) sport an inviting and lush sound. Sure, their handsomely-produced, melodic music might recall AM radio staples like Steely Dan, Tom Petty and (occasionally) Santana, with a sardonic edge which pops up from time to time. However, like The Church, they can completely captivate with shimmering guitar dreaminess - see the exquiste opener "Beautiful Sights", the equally sublime, sighing "Absence", or the longing, reflective "I See Your Face". With drop dead gorgeous tunes like these, it makes one welcome their return all the more. ”
