The Random Hubiak

The Random Hubiak writes songs that are primarily about loss and redemption, hope and dissolution. His music evokes comparisons to Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Ben Folds, Elton John, Nilsson, Stevie Nicks, and Rufus Wainright. His first recording, ENDLESS STREET: A SPIRITUAL TRAVELOGUE, is about losing the self in order to find the self and uses travel as a metaphor for spiritual growth; these stories-in-song trace the American landscape backwards from the deserts of the American west to the shores of the Atlantic. His second effort, SURVIVING THE JONESES, focuses on addiction, primarily the addiction to material goods that has turned our culture into one of rampant, empty consumerism, but also to addictive behavior in relationships. While it incorporates some of his earliest songs ("In My Arms" and "Fool's Lullabye" were both written at age 15 with the assistance of his friend Mel Breene, one year his senior, and "A Drop of Pain" was an adaptation of his childhood friend Lara Antkowiak's poem written at age 12) much of it was written in his twenties, with four new additions last year ("Halcyon Daze," "Piggy," "Famous for Nothing," and the ad hoc almost-title track "The Beginnings of Survival" were all penned and recorded between July 2010 and January 2011). The Random Hubiak's third full length recording -- completed in Derby, England -- is 2013's MEMOIRS OF A MANWHORE: THE REELING WALTZ OF A DRUNKEN LOTHARIO. It was co-produced with former college roommate and pianist/arranger/nuclear engineer Adam Silverstein at his side. Since then, The Random Hubiak has released 4 EPs to expand upon the album tracks. The first single/EP, "Anchors Aweigh," includes backing vocals not found on the album version, plus five additional non-album tracks of varying genres. The second single/EP, "The Trick," contains two new versions of "The Trick" (one rock single, one acoustic piano ballad version) and four new tracks based on classical pieces of music with librettos penned by Rand. The music comes from Manuel Maria Ponce, Beethoven, Rubinstein, and Tchaikovsky. The third single/EP, "Sad Sack," includes three new versions of the title track (one rock radio single edit, one rock playout version, and one big band version) and four new tracks that continue the big band sound explored for "Sad Sack." The final single/EP arrived in late August, "Hotel By The River." Besides a new version of the title track, taken up one full step and featuring duet vocals from Barbara Gurskey, it includes five brand-new tracks with an Americana/Country-Western feel to their arrangements, most notably the driving "I'm Told You Never Sleep" and the uplifting "Open." November 2015 finds The Random Hubiak Band dropping their latest album, THE BLEACHED BONES OF TITANS. The palette honors 1970s Brit Rock, sliding from Glam to Prog to Proto-Punk with the same level of literate lyricism you've come to expect from The Random Hubiak, and his usual shades of dark humour and shattered Romanticism. You'll find unsettling time signatures, tempo changes, and key changes within several of the songs to highlight the theme of anxiety and damaged souls. Meanwhile, Adam Silverstein is working with Rand on two new albums in Derby England, one of which is due in 2016 (a double album of orchestral piano-rock album) and the other in 2017 (funk), while The Random Hubiak Band continues to write and record in the US with a double album in the works.
