The Paychecks / Press

“The Paychecks were up next led by Judd Pemberton’s almost Possum-like tenor; he sings Merle’s “Mama Tried” with a hungry lean tone. Folks from the rodeo, The Ranch, even a couple of shoeshine men strolled down the stairs; The Stockyards populace was out in full force for this great lineup of musicians. The Basement makes friends of strangers, because there’s a different state of mind. The band swings that 50s style into a manic fervor, when the notes need to be there, nature calls them. That voice has a deep texture, fit and running the show. On lead axe, he’s got a sure fire gambler squealing the tires, Alan Prater twangs it home masterfully. There’s some serious swing; the Mojo is sincere. I can hear that mid-60s rebellion, a hint of extra fuzz, maybe an extra potent drum fill. This combination was a gallery of splendid tunes. Righteous style with a new and vibrant resonance, like the swollen sounds of revelry born from a new rich merger of historical motives.”
