TG McEwan performed over a thousand gigs and released three albums and several EPs and singles as "Tom McEwan" in the 1980s, playing mainly on the UK college circuit. The 1985 album, Live in Paris, was recorded live at the Newcastle Arts Festival as a solo show with various computerised accompaniment, and was well received in the press.
After a break to have a family, he returned to live performance in 1992 (finally completing and combining the mini albums The Cause (1987) and Triumph (1991), while living in Detroit and visiting Nashville, before returning to Edinburgh to release Moon On White Lake (1993). He spent the next few years helping to start the Edinburgh Songwriting movement and started to perform and release as TG McEwan (his songwriting credit) to avoid confusion with another Tom McEwan.
TG organised Gallery (1994) a compilation CD showcasing eight other writer-performers from ESS and two of his songs, which would then form the basis for his sixth album Tangle (1996).
At this time he also fronted the popular Captain Swing Ceilidh Band, as well as holding down a demanding job as Technical Director of a multimedia company. In 1998 he shifted to academia to have more time for music (hah!!) and soon got sucked into editing magazines, organising conferences and writing for learned journals, as well as the day job of lecturing on Human Computer Interaction and being responsible for the quality of degree courses.
A brain tumour in 2001 stopped live performance, but Tom recently returned to writing and performing, winning the LetsGetLyrical songwriting competition in 2011 with the song "Sweet", resulting in a jam on the song with Zoey Van Goey, which is stored on this site. Tom recently based himself in Pitlochry, where he has started working on songs in his garden shed, which has rather nice acoustics. A seventh album release "Promises" is now under construction, with the songs introduced at a series of live gigs at the Edinburgh Fringe, in the Acoustic Music Centre.
