About the Artist

Symmetry is everywhere. It relates to many things, both natural and human-made, but particularly to music, mathematics, architecture and electronics. The concept of Symmetry as an electronic music band was originally established in June of 1978 amid studies in Geometry and Surrealist Art. Naturally, its chosen medium was electronic since the associated technology comprises all aspects of symmetry on both a physical and theoretical level. JEM (a.k.a. Jose E. Murcia) grew up in the Bronx during the birth of Hip-Hop and at times even shook hands with Hip-Hop royalty such as DJ Kool Herc, DJ Tony Tone, Sisco Kid, Wanda Dee, Whiz Kid, DJ Super V, and DJ Frankie D Mena just to name a few. He traversed the full gamut of electronic musical expression starting with Musique Concrete generated by tape recorders, radios, found sounds, home-made and circuit-bent electronic gadgets with which he forged his own brand of experimental Rock. After a brief stint in the military, he continued in the 80s with Synth Pop created on consumer electronic keyboards, synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines. It was then that he began to infuse elements of Prog Rock with Jazz and New Age in his music. More recently, he's been doing live remixes of Ambient Electronica, EDM and World Fusion using loopers, sequencers, samplers and MP3s (no laptops or iPads). JEM considers himself an Electronic Musician exploring art, music, sound, space and the contrast between these four elements. He believes that he is only a conduit for the music of Symmetry. When people hear him play live or hear the music posted on Reverbnation.com or Soundcloud.com, they are hearing a separate entity known as Symmetry. Like all other music of the past and present, Symmetry comes to life whenever someone hears it. Once it enters a person's ears, it manifests itself in the subconscious mind and remains there for all time to come, and will continue to do so apart from the person who originally recorded it.
