“There is one sound familiar to music lovers in and around the Ithaca region. And that sound has gained widespread popularity to include a following that has grown internationally as well. That’s the melodic sounds and choral rifts of the Sim Redmond Band, and the six performing artists that produce what Sim Redmond himself describes as “roots rock with African and reggae influences.” This past week we visited the man whose name gives the band its local acclaim, and delved into the inner workings of the band’s success that spans over a decade in America, and has sprung familiarity across the shores and into Japan. With eight albums produced by the band over the 12 years they have graced the stage, what we found of special interest of late is the number of record sales in Japan, where avid listeners may not understand the words, but have obviously resonated with the energy of the music. “We just let it happen, and Japan was something that happened organically”
