Kuma Lisa and The Portraits
double bill at Ye Olde Rose & Crown, Walthamstow
Thursday 21st March 2013
Kuma Lisa is an international trio based in Walthamstow. The band mixes new and old folk elements from Eastern and Western Europe with jazz sensibilities. The music carries uneven rhythms where West and East meet. Melody is central in the sound and the vocals move from warm to soaring, influenced by Bulgarian folk from the ages. The song themes are journeys and explorations of dreams, reflection, nostalgia, love, nature in man, and celebration of life. Album Kuma Lisa 2013 to be released later this spring! http://www.kumalisa.co.uk/
From their roots playing as an acoustic duo the Portraits have exploded into an energetic, sparkling full band (violin, cello, bodhran, upright bass) and their live performances leave audiences moved to laughter and tears in equal measure. The Portraits’ warm upbeat sound, which mixes folk with music theatre, jazz and classical styles, has secured the band a big following in the UK and France. Their new album Counterbalance was released in November 2012. http://www.theportraitsmusic.com/home.cfm
