Joe Craven & The Sometimers
A 35 year veteran in the biz, Joe Craven first captured the wide-eyed stare of many fans in the ’90s as the astonishing percussionist and multi-instrumentalist of the David Grisman Quintet. Joe also performed and/or recorded with Jerry Garcia, Allison Brown, David Lindley, Vassar Clements, Stephane Grappelli, Howard Levy, Jason Marsalis and many others. Craven approaches his craft with an insider’s knowledge and adoration while masterfully re-imagining and re-composing existing music with new found relevance. As an award-winning educator, artist and actor, his oeuvre covers a huge range of musical genres and artistic inspirations.
On his jaunty and inventive new album, Garcia Songbook, Craven pays tribute to his time with Jerry Garcia while blazing a new path across the well-worn trails of the beloved and revered work of the patriarch of the Grateful Dead. Bursting forth with exciting and unexpected takes on familiar favorites, the music is seasoned with surprising flavors, deviations, re-imaginings and detours. Craven sings and plays mandolin, fiddle and percussion alongside his band The Sometimers, featuring his daughter Hattie Craven on harmony vocals, plus Bruce MacMillan (guitar, dobro & vocals), Jonathan Stoyanoff (bass & vocals) and Barry Eldridge (drums & percussion).

Fragile Thunder
We are musical children of the Grateful Dead; this means we are fans of a formidable book of original songs, devotees of collective improvisation, and strong believers in live performance. We compose our own music, we interpret songs from a great variety of musical sources, and we allow our performances to construct themselves to the greatest extent possible. We believe in the art of musical conversation, and we conduct that discourse in our own voices as opposed to mimicking the styles and sounds of others. Fragile Thunder is a collaboration among friends who share a love for this great American musical form. We have performed in various pairings in recent years, and we are setting out to create a new and unique acoustic take on the music of the Dead.
