Evoking the sounds from the classic ‘Blue Note’ period from the mid sixties, Hammerhead draws inspiration from notable composers of that period including Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver and Cedar Walton.
Formed through the common musical aspirations of internationally acclaimed tenor saxophonist Jason Bruer and hard swinging drummer Duncan Archibald, Ray Cassar trumpet, Andrew Robertson alto, Matt Gruebner bass, and Tim Bruer on piano round out the Sextet.
Hammerhead play a mix of original tunes inspired by the compositions of the 50’s and 60’s hard bop movement as well as fantastic arrangements of some of the great music from that period.
The originals, penned by Jason Bruer, whilst retaining the essential elements of the ‘Hard Bop’ movement, reflect a more contemporary and eclectic approach incorporating swing, latin and funk styling.
HAMMERHEAD offers a contemporary retelling of the music from the late ‘50s and ‘60s hard bop movement through an assortment of original compositions and classic arragenments of tunes from that period..
If you have a passion for jazz, HAMMERHEAD is the line-up to see. – Awia Markey, Diaspora magazine
