Dr. John at SFJAZZ Center, Miner Auditorium Nobody personifies the musical culture of New Orleans with more flair than Dr. John, the celebrated Crescent City piano player with the wonderfully gravelly singing voice. He created an irresistibly funky style of voodoo music mixing New Orleans R&B, boogie-woogie, rocknroll and a dash of Mardi Gras madness. A six-time GRAMMY winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. John is the colorful persona of Mac Rebennack, a masterly blues and boogie pianist who made his name as a teenager playing guitar and piano on late 50s records by top New Orleans musicians like Professor Longhair and Art Neville. He played on L.A. sessions with everyone from Sonny & Cher and Aretha Franklin to The Rolling Stones before debuting as Dr. John the Nite Tripper on his 1968 album Gris-Gris, a rousing brew of New Orleans funk, psychedelia and Fat Tuesday party music. His smash 1973 single Right Place Wrong Time became a classic. Dr. John won a Grammy in 89 for Makin Whoopee a duet with Ricki Lee Jones on his fine jazz standards album In a Sentimental Mood and another for the rocking Locked Down in 2013.
