Q: RORY, I AM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON THE TOP HAT CLUB IN TEXARKANA WHERE YOU SAID YOU FATHER PLAYED BACK IN THE DAY. GRATEFUL FOR ANY INFOR. mhackworth@cableone.net

A: It was a club my father Robert Smith owned with my mother's brothers in the early '60's. They were only able to stay open for 6-9 months, but had many A-list Jazz and Blues artists play there. Ray Charles, John Coletrain, Miles Davis, Bobby Blue Bland, Joe Tex, and many others. Story goes that one night, after my dad, who plays drums, and his band opened up for Ray Charles, Ray fired his drummer because he was too high to keep time, before the first set was done. He then asked my dad to sit in for the rest of the night. The other story Pops liked to tell was Coletrain got so mad at his drummer one night, he snatched the sticks out of his hand, beat him with them, and finished the night with no drums. I have asked my mother if she remembers the address, but she doesn't. Only picture we have is of my uncle playing a B3 Hammond in the club.
