This yearly scholarship is presented to graduating seniors from Sonora High School in Sonora Ca. who wish to pursue a career in the arts from singing, dancing and playing an instrument to painting, graphic design and even technical design. The money and recognition promote confidence and assurance in these students as take their next steps in following their dreams. The Young Artist Grant was conceived in 1995 by former Sonora High School graduate Todd Schroeder and his leadership teacher Steve Southard as a way for Todd to give back to the community that helped him start his career in music. Steve was looking for a way to bring Todd’s success back to Sonora and inspire others. Todd, a budding musician starting to see some success from his endeavors, wanted to encourage other dreamers from his small town to go beyond the “city limits”. At the time, Todd was musical directing for Rita Coolidge. So in the spring of 1995, the first “benefit concert” was held in the Sonora High School Auditorium. On the bill were Todd, a few of his friends and the legendary Rita Coolidge. It was an instant success. Now, 20 years later, the annual concert continues as the primary resource for the Young Artist Grant, which to date, has been awarded to over 40 students.
Headlining the show will be Sam Harris, direct from his Off-Broadway hit run of “Ham: A Musical Memoir,” directed by Billy Porter (“Kinky Boots”) and produced by Susan Dietz. Other performers will include Mark D. Espinoza, best known for his role as “Jesse” on the hit 90s TV series “Beverly Hills, 90210”; multi-platinum selling songwriter Kevin Fisher; Robyn Spangler, BroadwayWorld’s 2011 Cabaret Artist of the Year, and many more. Light and sound design will once again be created by Broadway veteran technical director Matt Berman The “Todd Schroeder Young Artist Grant” was founded by Schroeder and his high school leadership teacher, Steve Southard in 1995. For the past 18 years this grant has given annual scholarships to graduating high school seniors wishing to pursue a career in the arts.
