Audio Paintings
by Rick Stasel
'Knew Music' is a philosophy of spontaneous recording, atmospheric composition, and emotional sound painting.
Created over decades using home studios, multitrack recording, improvisation, and layered textures, 'Knew Music' blends elements of:
ambient music
psychedelic music
folk
experimental sound
improvisation
environmental audio landscapes
into deeply personal audio experiences.
Rather than focusing on technical perfection or commercial formulas, 'Knew Music' emphasizes:
atmosphere
emotional immediacy
texture
spontaneity
and the unpredictable beauty of imperfect human performance.
Most recordings begin intuitively:
a rhythm, a guitar texture, a melodic fragment, or simply a mood.
From there, layers evolve organically through improvisation and emotional response. The process resembles painting more than traditional songwriting. Sounds interact like colors and shapes on a canvas, creating movement, contrast, and emotional space.
Many pieces blur the boundaries between:
song and soundtrack
structure and abstraction
melody and environment
intention and accident.
'Knew Music' treats recording itself as composition.
Influenced by artists and ideas ranging from:
Jimi Hendrix
Brian Eno
Bob Dylan
The Beatles
ambient and minimalist composition
psychedelic experimentation
outsider recording culture
'Knew Music' explores sound as emotional environment rather than strict musical architecture.
The recordings are intentionally human:
immediate
exploratory
atmospheric
imperfect
alive.
At its core, 'Knew Music' is about creative freedom:
the belief that meaningful art can emerge from instinct, curiosity, experimentation, and emotional honesty rather than technical perfection alone.
These recordings are not attempts to imitate commercial studio productions.
They are audio paintings:
captured moments of atmosphere, memory, texture, and feeling.
