Rachel Anne Goodman was bit by the folk music bug growing up in Canyon, California surrounded by the burgeoning music scene of the Bay Area. Her songs gain wings from a life steeped in traditional country, old-time, folk and bluegrass music. She writes about home, life, nature and love, with a down-home, front-porch sensibility inspired by writers like Kate Wolf, Nanci Griffith, and Hazel Dickens.
Growing up, singing was always her passion.
In the 80’s, Rachel moved to Appalachia and was grateful to meet and play with many great traditional singers on their front porches and at old-time festivals and learn their repertoire of old songs. She is the producer of radio documentaries such as Southern Songbirds: The Women of Early Country and Old-Time Music, The Boomtown Chronicles, and Pastures of Plenty, a History of California Farmworkers.
She hosted folk/bluegrass radio shows on public radio stations around the U.S. since 1980 and is currently the founder of the Santa Cruz community radio station, KSQD (K-Squid).
Currently, Rachel sings and plays in The Coast Ridge Ramblers, a folk band, and Stone Circle, a Celtic trio with her husband, Steve Coulter. She has taught singing workshops at Sempervirens Trad Camp in Boulder Creek, CA, Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, and Lark in the Morning. She teaches journalism at Cabrillo College in Aptos.
