Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Born in 1958 and raised in Akron, Ohio, I grew up in a family of six children—all of us could sing and play an instrument. For my brother James Ingram and me, that musical foundation became a lifelong career.
In December 1976, I became a founding member of SWITCH alongside Greg Williams, Jody Sims, Bobby DeBarge, Tommy DeBarge, and Eddie Fluellen. Signed to Motown Records, we recorded five albums during our time together from 1977 to 1982—two platinum and three gold—with sales totaling more than eight million records. Our five Top Ten singles included “There’ll Never Be,” “I Wanna Be Closer,” “Best Beat in Town,” “I Call Your Name,” and “Love Over & Over Again.”
Since 1984, my career has also taken me behind the scenes, contributing background and guest vocals to recordings by Quincy Jones, Go West, Sheena Easton, Lionel Richie, Céline Dion, Kanye West, Julio Iglesias, Barbra Streisand, Willie Nelson, Olivia Newton-John, and many others.
My film work includes lead and background vocals for Father of the Bride Part II, The Little Mermaid, My Best Friend’s Wedding, RV, Shrek, and The Road to El Dorado. Along the way, I’ve also lent my voice to television shows, TV and radio commercials, and radio station IDs.
Songwriting has been another rewarding part of my musical journey. I’ve written or co-written songs for Patti Austin, The Temptations, Teddy Pendergrass, Janet Jackson, Alyson Williams, Barry White, Brenda Epperson of The Young and the Restless, Wayne Henderson, Wilton Felder, and, of course, SWITCH.
Today, I continue to record, write, and perform—whether in the studio, as a special guest with other artists, or onstage for my own shows. SWITCH also continues to perform around the country, bringing the music we love to longtime fans and new audiences.
