“I’ll admit that I am non-committal when it comes to NXNE. I’ve been known to catch a few songs of one act and then wander to the nearest venue to hear the next few of another. This is what I had planned on doing with Svavar Knutur – and then he started to play. I don’t know if I have ever seen anyone captivate a room like Knutur did. His contrast between sentimental songs and comedic storytelling was the perfect rest for festival goers. Playing self-described fjord folk, this Icelandic artist could do no wrong on Saturday night.”

“The album immediately climbs to great depths and engages more melancholy themes as it follows with “While The World Burns” and the title-track. The darker hue envelopes the release as the record winds onto the rocky shores of happiness and examines the journey every living soul must take to find it. “Prayer For The Dead,” the final number, concludes Ölduslóð on its darkest note about forgiveness and self-damnation. Knútur does well to create a finale that, while seemingly despairing, seems strangely hopeful, mirroring the feelings he tried to convey at the start of the record. With the album split between Knútur’s native Icelandic and English, sporadically jumping between the two, Ölduslóð makes for one incredible release. Such passion and pride is seldom seen in modern music the way it’s crafted here. The bewitching charm of this emotionally moving album will remain a gem in contemporary folk music for years to come.”

“Ich erwähnte ja bereits das Gespür für erlesene Harmonien und Melodien, doch Ölduslóð wird zu einem vollendeten Meisterwerk erst durch Knuturs warme, weiche Stimme, mit der er sich neben Landsleute wie Benni Hemm Hemm oder Schöngeister wie Jens Lekman stellt. Ganz wundervoll aber sind seine englischen Texte, denen man sehr gut folgen kann. Auf "Baby Won't You Marry Me", bei dem die hochgeschätzte Marketa Irglova Gastvocals beisteuert, kann Svavar Knútur mit Wortwitz glänzen ("Baby, would you marry me under an apple tree or the bottom of the sea or maybe on a train to Spain?") und die "Humble Hymn" ist ein goldglänzendes Plädoyer für unsere allzu menschlichen Schwächen ("Without our failure there's no redemption. And so we take our chances to fall and rise ”

“Svavar Knútur began his musical career as singer-guitarist in the band Hraun (Lava). After two albums, the members went their own way. Troubadour Svavar, from the West Fjords, started out as a singer-songwriter in the fjord folk subgenre. His musical influences are both Nick Drake and Nick Cave, both Bonnie Prince Billy and Kris Kristofferson as Leonard Cohen and Cat Stevens. "Ölduslóð" (way of the waves) is the third solo album, the successor of Kvöldvaka (Campfire Songs, 2009) and Amma (songs for my grandmother, 2010). All these albums are intimate, acoustic records. All albums have a cover drawing made by Svavar’s daughter. For his third piece, he had both vocal and piano support from the Czech artist Markéta Irglová. Her input results in a good synergy with Knútur’s voice. In the second song there is a funny reference to the Bloodhound Gang: ‘The roof is on fire’. Svavar additionally holds a penchant for putting as many as possible la la la's into his songs, such as”
