Vance, we're trying to let Monty know that his old friend, also a jazz pianist, passed away. Would you please see that he gets the information we copied in below? Thank you. Elgin & Jackie Vines (Elgin's email: grevines@sbcglobal.net) Hello Friends – It is with sadness that I report Dick Morgan passed away on Sunday October 20th after a brief illness. Well known world wide and in the Metro DC area, Dick was a life long contributor to the world of jazz. Born in Petersburg VA, he played on the radio at age 10 and for Duke Ellington as a teenager. He was also a favorite of the legendary band leader Tommy Dorsey. In his more than 50-year career he performed with such well-known artists as Herb Ellis, Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Ernie Andrews, Keter Betts, and Etta Jones. Julian “Cannonball” Adderley arranged Dick’s first recording on the Riverside label, where he was featured on a piano jazz sampler that included Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans and Billy Taylor. Dick went on to make many fine recordings under his own name, several of which are available on CD including Make Someone Happy, Spiritual Journey, Spellbound, Drive, Passion, Unpredictable, Dick Morgan Live, After Hours and most recently Holidays For Sure. Of his CD released in 2009, Live at Montpelier, Downbeat Magazine wrote that “Morgan shines in a rich album of jazz standards.” There will be a memorial service for Dick at Shiloh Baptist Church located at 1500 9th Street NW, Washington, DC on Saturday November 23rd at 1:00pm. Please keep Dick’s family in your thoughts and prayers.
