[ The Hamilton Spec.] Say Goodbye to revenge, Say friends of Mugrave

June 10, 2010 Nicole O'Reilly The Hamilton Spectator (Jun 10, 2010) James Gordon Jr.(Jr Bebble) was friends with 18- year old Brandon Musgrave, who was tragically shot in the head at a Hamilton House Party.

The Hamilton Spectator James Gordon Jr.(Jr Bebble) was friends with 18-year-old Brandon Musgrave, who was shot and killed at a party over complaints about the music being played.

The 21-year-old aspiring hip-hop artist was also friends with Joshua Warner in middle school. Warner, 21, is one of two suspected killers in the Musgrave homicide and he has been at large since the March 13 murder.

Shocked by the senseless violence of Musgrave's death and further concerned about the violent rhetoric calling for retribution by friends and on Facebook, Gordon and his cousin Marcel Powell -- also a friend of Musgrave's -- decided to turn their concern into music. As JR Bebble and MCLZ, they wrote and recorded Say Bye Bye about ending the cycle of violence.

The song asks why this type of violence seems to be perpetuating among youth. It asks why mothers are having to bury their sons.

"Another 911 call, another student not in the hall ..."

A YouTube video dedicates the song to Musgrave and two other young men who have died -- Xavier Miles, a 25-year-old Mohawk College police foundation student shot to death outside a James Street North bar on Oct. 5, 2007 and Troy Pinnock who died from leukemia.

"It touched me to write this for them," Gordon said.

It also brought tears to the eyes of Musgrave's family, who have been calling for peace since the murder.

Musgrave's mom Janet said the song was tastefully done and a fitting tribute to her son's legacy.

She maintains that any resolution for the murder needs to come from police and the justice system.

"We're still grieving," she said, adding that they are also looking for closure.

June 16 would have been Brandon's 19th birthday. To remember, family and friends are walking at Bayfront Park Sunday. Money raised goes to victims of violent crimes.

Tyrone Chambers, 23, was arrested in Halifax on April 10 and charged with second-degree murder. He remains in custody. Chambers' girlfriend Yaasmiyn Davidson, 20, is accused of being an accessory after the fact for her alleged role in the escape. She was released to her parents on house arrest.

Hamilton police continue to search for Warner, who is the subject of a Canada-wide warrant.

The Hamilton Police Services Board is offering up to $10,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Anyone with information should call 905-546-4129 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
