Recent Study Brings New Meaning to Ski Safety
It's early February: prime time to take those winter vacations out to the mountains, but before you go, make sure you are up on the new statistics that prove just how important ski safety can be. In a recent research development that analyzed the data from over 12 studies around Europe and Asia, they concluded that wearing a helmet while skiing cuts down the risk of injury by 35%. That's a substantial enough number to make just about anyone think twice before hitting the ski slopes without the proper head gear.
Although wearing a helmet is not mandatory in winter skiing spots across the US, the hope is that this new study will instill a sense of increased safety among all skiers. The new study also included in its data that there is no evidence that wearing a helmet while skiing or snowboarding increases injury. Much of the time, the absence of a helmet is due to the fact that many of the regular winter sports fanatics still believe that wearing a head peice can actually increase the risk of injury.
Ski resort staff and skiers are reporting a steady increase in the amount of skiers and snowboarders that are sporting helmets and protective head gear. As the data from this study becomes more and more visible, snow goers are expected to make the right decision- even though it is not required by law.
