stringbeanIn New Jersey ist Stringbean (Ken Sorenson) eine musikalische Institution mit seiner Begleitband The Stalkers. Mit seinem aktuellen Album Layin' Low sollte er in der Bluesgemeinde auch außerhalb ein paar Freunde mehr gewinnen können.
Normalerweise liebe ich es nicht, wenn ich zu einem Künstler keine Informationen im Netz finden kann. Denn ein paar biografische und sonstige Angaben hätte ich schon gern für eine Rezension. Aber Stringbean gibt sich da geheimnisvoll. Selbst bei seinem Plattenlabel Blues Leaf Records gibt's über ihn nur eine leere Seite. Dabei ist so eine Heimlichtuerei doch gar nicht nötig: Sein aktuelles Album "Layin Low" ist eine Bluesscheibe, wie es sie in diesem Jahr noch nicht allzu viele gab:
15 lieder zwischen akustischem Blues, Bluesrock, Boogie, Soulblues Funk, zwischen Texas und Chicago. Und sogar Reggae gibts in einem Stück. Die ganze Vielfalt sozusagen in einer Scheibe. Und dabei klingt das Album doch wie aus einem Guss: relaxed wie Stoppok (das meint: nicht so lahm wie Jack Johnson), grooved dezent vor sich hin und langweilt kein bisschen.

StringbeanStringbeanStringbean ist ein Harpspieler mit einem Klang, der sich im Ohr festsetzt, auch wenn man ihn nicht sofort einer der Schulen zuordnen kann. Die Begleiter (Dan Mulvay - b, Joe Murphy - g, Sim Cain - dr) unterstützen den Gesang, der angenehm nölend daher kommt und manchmal gar an den alten Roger Chapman erinnert. Obwohl: Auf Dauer ist der Gesang wahrscheinlich dann doch die entscheidende Schwachstelle. Denn er ist einfach nicht variabel genug. Aber insgesamt ist Layin' Low für mich eine der Neuentdeckungen des Jahres.

Normally, I love it when I can find an artist, no information on the web. For some biographical and other information I would have liked for a review. But Stringbean adopt as mysterious. Even with his record label, Blues Leaf Records's about him only a blank page. It is such a secretive but not necessary: his latest album "Layin Low" is a blue disc, as they were this year not so many:
15 songs between acoustic Blues, Blues Rock, Boogie, Soul Blues Funk, between Texas and Chicago. And even reggae in there in one piece. The whole variety in it were a disk. And the album sounds like a unified whole: relaxed as Stoppok (which means: not as lame as Jack Johnson), grooved discreetly to himself, and not a bit bored.

StringbeanStringbeanStringbean is a harp player with a sound that settles in the ear, even when it is not immediately be assigned by the schools. The companions (Dan Mulvay - b, Joe Murphy - g, Sim Cain - dr) support the song, which is pleasant and reminds nölend therefore sometimes even at the old Roger Chapman. Although: In the long run is probably the song then but the crucial weakness. For he is just not flexible enough. But overall Layin 'Low for me one of the discoveries of the year.i

Ten Blues stallions and a mare make up the corral represented in Blues Leaf Records, Leaflets, Volume II 2000-2006, issued this year for blues listeners.
The one mare is none other than the award winning West Coast resident Janiva Mangess, with a sultry Stormy Blues, and deep, almost swing groove of Nobody Loves You Like Me, From her Blues Leaf days. The stallions are made up of a heavy east coast Tri-State contingent of award winner Paul Oshcher’s solo acoustic/harp blues, playing his own all Night; harp players Steve Guyger on his Chicago styled Sometimes I Wonder, and Sandy Mack playing Keep Holding on Baby; The Killer Blues Band with their unique band composition of organ, drums, and violin playing Don and Dewey; The Tonemasters with their three piece presentation of a swingy jazz blues on their Goin’ With The Flow; and the fabulous String Bean Stalkers, with their Back On That Horse and I Wish You Would, on this collection.
From Texas, organ player Red Young dishes up his Texas blues style on his Organ Grind Blues, and from Detroit we have George Friend with his laid back Cajun rock-a-billy styling on his own Whole Lotta Trouble, from Miami native Albert Castiglia, with his beefy version of Graham Drout’s Big Toe, and from Russia via Canada, the cutting Stratocaster sound of Arsen (He set’s it on fire!) Shomhakov.
Two things I like about this CD. First, it’s a great sampler of some excellent artists. Awards are great, but I look for artistry, and this collection is top shelf. Second, this is a great party CD. When I was a carpenter, I’d take my iPod to work, plug it into my iHome and put it on shuffle and make my co-workers listen to whatever came out. That includes classical pieces, university lectures, and the 6,900+ songs I have. Like radio with no commercials, and an education to boot! This CD by Blues Leaf is a smaller version of that, from the quieter Delta style of Paul Oscher to the appropriately named Dangerous, by Arsen Shomakhov. Put it on, turn it up a bit. It’s the perfect backdrop to a night of barbeque with friends.

Albert Castiglia's Keepin On Tops at Blues RadioPosted

Keepin On is ferocious, aggressive blues record that climbed the blues radio charts for several weeks. It has been in the upper reaches of the chart for some time but hadn't gathered enough steam to get to the top until this week. The big debut in this week's chart comes from one of the legends of blues harps, James Cotton. Cotton is indeed a giant in the blues story and Giant, his latest, debuts in the Top 10. The new disc just came out this week and I got to spend some time listening to it. It is near the top of my "to review" list and I hope to have something ready for us all to discuss really soon. One of the many things I love about the blues is the sense of history that comes with the music and fans' willingness to embrace the continued work of giants and grizzled veterans who helped shape and define the music. "Superharp" still has something to offer and it's great to have him still here with us, still playing, and fans lapping it up. Another great harp stylist who hasn't been at it quite as long as Cotton but is no rookie, Bob Corritore, has his Harmonica Blues making another nice surge this week. Other notable names in the Top 10 are Charlie Musselwhite, who is out touring in earnest to promote his The Well and Robin Rogers' Back In The Fire. Arsen Shomakhov - On The Move - CD Review From Germany
Arsen Shomakhov ist einer der aufregendsten Gitarristen, die der Blues zur Zeit zu bieten hat. Zwischen lässigem Swing, jazzigen Tönen, Ausflügen in den Rock oder die kaukasischen Hochebenen spielt die Musik des aktuellen Albums "On The Move".
In den Internetradio-Charts ist das bei Blues Leaf Records erschienene Album prompt bis auf Platz 2 gestürmt. Nur Pinetop Perkins konnte sich vor dem aus Russland stammenden Shomakhov platzieren. Schon lange hat keiner mehr so lässig und brilliant das single-note-Spiel auf der Gitarre zelebriert. Erinnerungen mögen wach werden an Robben Ford (aber der ist meist wesentlich poppiger) oder an den Österreicher Karl Ratzer. Aber all das können nur Hilfskrücken zur Orientierung sein. Shomakhov hat in den Jahren seinen eigenen Stil gefunden und ist nur noch nicht so bekannt, weil er erst langsam international wahrgenommen wird - die russische Blues-Szene ist halt doch noch eher was für Insider.
On The Move ist ein wunderbar altmodisches Blues und Rhythm & Blues-Album, voller Hooks, die man so schon in den 50ern gehört haben könnte. Der Fuß zuckt im Rhythmus, die Finger schnippen. Und irgendwie ist einem nach einem sofortigen Sprung auf die Tanzfläche.
Shomakhovs Band ist mit Bläsern, Hammond und einem guten Kontrabass klassisch besetzt. Die Produktion von "On The Move" ist klar und druckvoll. Und die Platte überhaupt ist auf jedenfall in unseren Top 10 für die Blues-Alben des Jahres

Arsen_Shomakhov_On_The_Move_-_COVER_WebResShomakhov arsenic is one of the most exciting guitarists of the blues has to offer at this time. Between casual swing, jazzy tones, trips to the Rock or the Caucasian highlands plays the music of the current album "On The Move".
In the Internet radio charts at the Blues Leaf Records released album promptly stormed up to 2nd place. Only Pinetop Perkins was able to place before the coming of Russia Shomakhov. For a long time no one has more casual way and celebrates the brilliant single-note playing on the guitar. Memories may be awake to Robben Ford (but is often much poppy) or the Austrian Karl Ratzer. But all this can be only auxiliary crutches for orientation. Shomakhov has found his own style in the years and is still not as well known because it is only slowly perceived internationally - the Russian blues scene is still rather just what insiders.
On The Move is a wonderfully old-fashioned blues and rhythm & blues album, full of hooks that you could have heard so already in the 50s. The foot twitching in rhythm, snapping his fingers. And somehow an instant after a jump on the dance floor.
Shomakhovs band with horns, Hammond and a good bass filled classic. The production of "On The Move" is clear and punchy. And the record is even at least in our top 10 for the blues albums of the year.

Stripped Down at The Bang Palace by Todd Wolfe Band
I give this CD a 8 out of 10 ranking. Stranger Blues is an upbeat rockin’ version of this classic. There is some great guitar soloing here. On Bad Boywe can really feel the funk from the drums and the guitar. Come in My Kitchen stretches out and incorporates some female backing vocals. It turns into a real nice slide fest. The acoustic slide guitar work really blues up the rock classic, Mountain’s Mississippi Queen. Bobby Womack’s It’s All Over Now was a nice choice to cover. Its dirty guitar groove keeps you right in the game, until the slide solo with a familiar riff locks up this choice for you. Three of the songs are original here and once again I look forward to hearing more original stuff in the future. However the worn out classics were done well. This is a talented group of musicians and Mr. Wolfe’s guitar playing is inspired.

ALBERT CASTIGLIA Keepin On Blues Leaf
Former lead guitarist for the late Junior Wells presentshis latest project, KEEPIN ON, with a mix of originals andsome interesting covers that have been ignored by toomany folks in the reading audience for way too long.
In the latter subdivision, the boogie of John LeeHooker's "Goin' Upstairs" is fueled by Castiglia's slidework while Mack Rice's "Cadillac Assembly Line" burns throughout. Add a funky take on Bob Dylan's "Til I Fell In Love With You" and a resurrection of T-Bone Walker's "MyBaby Is Now On My Mind" to the list of orphaned songs finding a new home. Pick of the category, though, has to be Peter Green's "Could Not Ask For More," where both harpist Sandy Mack and piano man Bill "Mighty" Quinn duel for the spotlight, much to the delight of the listener.
On the original side of the ledger, the title cut channels Creedence Clearwater Revival with Castiglia cranking it outat the end, while the guitarist duels with bassist A.J. Kelly during the instrumental "Mojo 305." Although KEEPIN'ON has pretty high standard throughout, that can't besaid for "Do You Love Me?," a funky, and I mean that inevery sense of the word, dance number that I'm still trying to figure out how to razor blade off the disc.
With Toby Walker adding dobro to the shadings of "Sweet Southern Angel" and "Murderin'' Blues," KEEPIN'ON has a lot of fine string work throughout that can be appreciated even if you don't live in the Windy City.
