Hip Hop Squares
Hip Hop Squares is a spin off on an older show called, Hollywood Squares. After reviewing the new show, Hip Hop Squares, it didn’t perform as expected. The new show didn’t follow the scheme of the original as far as the questions went. The questions that were asked on the show were actually quite odd ,an some of the answers were just as odd. The show was not what many viewers expected.
Rapper Fat Joe was asked, “What kitchen utensil does a pigs penis look like?” After jokingly naming a few wrong answers he replied “it looks like a corkscrew.” The contestant didn’t agree with the rapper, who turned out to be correct. Which lead viewers to believe that the panel knew the questions ahead of time, because that’s something most people wouldn’t know.
Along with the strange questions on Hip Hop Squares, the contestants consistently picked the same square , which lead to some of the celebrities not being pick to answer questions, such as the number 1 independent rapper in the world Tech n9ne, an comedian Donell Rawlins. Tech n9ne apologizes to fans saying “its ok I recorded 3 episodes” referring to not saying a word on the show.
Most people would say the best part was watching the wild boy himself, Machine Gun Kelly. “MGK”, the energetic rapper from Ohio seemed to be drunk in his square, just like his performances he couldn’t sit still. When asked questions, MGK was almost upside down when he responded to those questions. The show would’ve been more entertaining if each celebrity had received a spotlight.
Mac Miller a hip hop artist from Pittsburg, Pa, was the most called upon celebrity on the entire first episode, maybe because he was the middle square, an anyone who’s played tic-tac-toe (which the game show is modeled after) usually goes for the middle square first. The hip hop freshman was not shy to the camera one bit, telling jokes with Wu-Tang member Ghost Face Killa from the opening of the show.
The show was advertised as the game show that turns into a party, and with the caliber of celebs on the panel it would have made great television to see them party an perform a song or two. Overall the show was not as entertaining as expected because of the types of questions asked, and some of the wild antics. Some of the celebrity panel not being called on was a big let down to there fans, who sat through the entire show an didn’t get to hear them speak. The missing “party” was another big let down to viewers as well.
For the future of the game show, we can just hope they live up to what they advertise. Many of the viewers were disappointed by the lack of “fun” on the show, an that probably didn’t go over well with the network either. If they don’t get it together by the next episode their ratings will make a sharp decrease very suddenly. This can lead to the show struggling to get a second season, or even stay on air.
