How many more musical eulogies are we going to have to endure before The Music
Industry finally wakes up and again leads us out of the rut we have fallen into?
The World is waiting for real change and I think The Music Industry who has taken
us out of worse times than these should ignite the world in a way only they can.
Our past has shown us that when times got tough, there has always been a great
musical upheaval to get us through, Back in 1963, the world was caught up in the
struggle between the two great super powers, nuclear war was a constant threat,
America lost its’ President to an assassin and the world stage was pretty grim.
Then came The Beatles and it seemed like the world was new again. The problems of
the world were still there, but life just seemed better. As newer and more
different music evolved, everybody seemed a bit better at taking care of
themselves as well as the world as a whole. In fact, look at everything that has
gone right with the world since, it has all been a result, whether directly or
indirectly, of music. It runs the spectrum from “Give Peace A Chance” to “We Are
The World,” and everything in between. Whether we want to admit it or not the
world lives or dies on the music it follows.
The music of our lives shapes who we are, it makes us full of life, and helps us
face whatever challenges lie ahead. Whenever things get to be too tough and coping
with life becomes a never-ending struggle, there has always been music. The one
constant in our lives to motivate us to act, to dream, and to live again.
So I have to ask, where is it now? We have been listening to the same old/same old
for so long, for too long. A lot of the music has gotten so bad that we listen
more to the trips to jail or to rehab than to the musicians themselves. The music
has taken a back seat to the drama.
We need a fresh start, a new beginning, and a different attitude. Things that only
music can achieve. The Music Industry has to stop baby sitting the “has beens” and
start promoting a new direction. I never thought I’d see the day when the Music
Industry would become like the rest of Big Business, a part of The Status Quo, so
satisfied with itself or everything else, and so reluctant to change.
What does it say about the state of our music today when the dead musicians are
more popular than the live ones? You would think with all the great bands on Reverbnation,
Myspace, Youtube, or on the internet as a whole, someone could find new talent.
There’s a lot of it out there. I listen to it everyday. It’s now time for a change. The talent is out there and The World
Is waiting!
