Who? What? is Mark Stoney

New link: http://www.sonicbids.com/epk/epk.aspx?epk_id=128504

Mark Stoney is a 24-year-old multi-instrumentalist from Sheffield, with the talent, the looks and the songs to become a big star. His debut release, Constantly Running, was single of the week at the iTunes music store, scoring 17,000 downloads in Britain in just one week; his new single, Soap in a Bathtub, and forthcoming debut album confirm Stoney as a songwriter to keep a beady eye on. The echoes in his music of the Small Faces, solo McCartney and Hunky Dory Bowie share space with an up-to-date musical eccentricity and elasticity that calls to mind Beck, Super Furry Animals and Ed Harcourt. In other words, weird enough to be hip, commercial enough to be huge.... Dan Cairns, Sunday Times Culture Magazine

Sifting through the reviews of Stoney's music over recent months, two things seem to stand out. One is the overwhelming acclaim bestowed upon the music of the 25 year old from those who have discovered it. The other is the diversity of artistic comparisons drawn by writers trying their best to accurately categorize it; Syd Barret meets Beck (Record Collector), Athlete meets Magnet (The Fly), Bowie meets Super Furry Animals (Sunday Times), the list goes on....

Most are valid, but none are completely definitive, as the music of Stoney has never been easy to define. Multifaceted and highly eclectic, but always outstanding, it's just distinctly Stoney.

Mark Stoney writes, records, produces & plays nearly all the instruments on his records himself (all but drums), and largely records them on a simple setup at his Sheffield home, giving him a truly unique and distinctive production style. His small run homegrown singles "Soap in a Bathtub", "Constantly Running" and "Until you leave" have won him an ever growing fanbase and many champions across the board at UK radio including Jonathan Ross, Phil Jupitus, Tom Robinson, Dermot O'Leary, Bob Harris, Janice Long and Marc Riley among many others.

Stoney's brilliant full album release "The Scene and the Unseen" is a truly diverse and adventurous body of work that combines classic songwriting with forward thinking to stunning effect. The title is apt as Stoney both touches his surroundings with a tinge of alienation and looks beyond. The observational storytelling of the gutsy "Jake" and "Until you leave" sit alongside the reflective beauty of the tender "Ghost" and "Underdog". All twelve tracks are delivered with such consistent lyrical finesse and brain-invading melodies that every song is a standout - the record is quality songwriting from start to finish.

Stoney is without doubt a true "musician's musician", and in his adopted hometown of Sheffield his idiosyncratic style has been held in high regard for the last few years, with many current bands from the emerging "New Yorkshire" trend publicly doffing their caps to Stoney. More recently, word of his writing talent has been rapidly spreading further afield, winning public admiration and collaboration requests from Ivor Novello winning writer Guy Chambers, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner and legendary producer Rick Rubin.

Along with the backing of a revolving cast of excellent musicians to take the songs to the stage, Stoney has quickly forged a reputation as an exhilarating live performer. As well as his own headline gigs and national radio sessions, Stoney and his band have recently completed a string of stunning shows with the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Feeder, Athlete, Magic Numbers and Alfie and festival appearances including Glastonbury, Truck and SXSW.

"The Scene & The Unseen" was "soft-released" in the UK on Too Nice Recordings on July 10th (itunes download) & July 17th (CD). It is being generally released October/November 2007
