Interview with The J.O.B. (Jim O'Ferrell Band)

The J.O.B. (Jim O’Ferrell Band) is: Jim O’Ferrell – acoustic guitar, vocals Jason Crawford – electric guitar Eric Bandy – drums and percussion Len DuPilka – fretless bass The Jim O’Ferrell band (J.O.B.) is an Americana rock band who has been in business since 2008. The band was formed by O’Ferrell and Jason Crawford upon O’Ferrell’s return from military service in Iraq. Much of the band’s earlier music draws from this wartime experience. The band has had several charting songs and continues to be a thriving presence in the RVA music community. The J.O.B. are a monogamous group dedicated to their project. With the exception of Eric Bandy’s membership in his church’s praise band, the members are involved only with the J.O.B. While O’Ferrall and Bandy are married to only one instrument, guitarist Jason Crawford and bassist Len DuPilka have an eclectic range of musical talent. Crawford can play the drums, bass, and modular synthesizer while DuPilka can play the piccolo bass and the baroque tenor flute. All the members in the band have been playing music for at least 15 years and in some cases, according to DuPilka, “over a quarter of a century!” The band draws influence from a wide range of artists. While Led Zeppelin seems to be a popular choice with most of the members of the band Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Trey Azagthoth, Herbie Hancock, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, Lous Reed, Masami Akita, Ron Carter, Eddie Gomez Chris Squire, Percy Jones, Dave Matthews, and Ilan Rubin are all mentioned as influences (just to name a few!) O’Ferrell says, “As a songwriter lyricist, I am more influenced by poetry than music. My songwriting is just as influenced by Dylan Thomas and Walt Whitman as it is by CCR and Led Zeppelin.” When asked what their favorite band is the band continued to have very different tastes. O’Ferrell, at the moment, is really into the Atlanta-based metal band Mastodon, DuPilka’s favorite is the Grammy awarding winning jazz-fusion band, Weather Report, while Bandy is a fan of the legendary Led Zeppelin. The diverse influences and backgrounds can be found woven into the Jim O’Ferrell Band’s music which has a wonderful blend of Americana, rock, and blues. When not practicing or performing, the band spends time together by playing video games, listening to music, and occasionally attending Flying Squirrels games. But their biggest passion is music and they are a fixture at local shows in RVA. According to Crawford, “We live and breathe music so when we’re not working on our own music we’re heading out to check out someone else’s.” Local favorites of the band include Against Grace and the Richmond Symphony. In all, the members of the Jim O’Ferrell band love what they do. They love music. They love the collaborative and creative process of making music with people they care about. O’Ferrell and DuPilka grew up together and even served in the same military unit. This particular lineup has been playing together for over a year with no plans to stop in the near future. The band will play anywhere people will listen but a perfect venue would be around a fire with a group of good friends. “This is who I am. This is all I do. I have no other job. I want no other job. I’ll never do anything else.” – Jim O’Ferrell – Abilino, Staff Writer, RVA Music Scene You can learn more about the Jim O’Ferrell band at the following websites: https://www.facebook.com/thejoband https://myspace.com/jimoferrell http://www.bandmix.com/thejoband/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_J.O.B.
