Cathay de Grande Reunion Extravaganza – Burbank, CA
http://www.bigwheelmagazine.com/show_reviews/cathay-de-grande-reunion-extravaganza-burbank-ca-february-25-2012/
February 25, 2012
Something that is very different about the Los Angeles scene of today is back in the 80's Punk scene there were a decent amount of clubs to go see bands at. One of the more prolific clubs back then was the Cathay de Grande which was located at the corner of Argyle Street and Selma Avenue in Hollywood, pretty much on the street behind the Fonda Theater aka The Music Box. The place was hated by the media and even labeled as "The most dangerous club in America", but to the regulars, the place was just a good time waiting to happen. The place closed up in the mid 80's with nothing by memories of the friends they met there and the bands they saw way before many became as well known as they are today.
Candace who used to book bands at the Cathay organized a weekend bash with a bunch of bands, many who have played at The Cathay. This reunion was a great time for many of the people who found The Cathay de Grande a sanctuary. The event almost seemed to reflect the actual Cathay with part of the crowd watching the bands (as if they were downstairs at The Cathay) and another part hanging outside in the alley way of the warehouse (as if they were upstairs at the bar of The Cathay) chatting it up with their old friends.
Bands performing: Saturday: DECRY – Billybones – Entropy – The Boners – Defects – Fallujah 71 – Mike Watt & The Missingmen – Carlos Guitarlos Sunday: Carnage Asada – Circle One – Sorry State – Don't No – "UNGLUICIDAL" – Public Nuisance – Duct Tape Hostage – Carlos Guitarlos

This show Feb 25th & 26th was a great success!
Carlos Guitarlos opened the show both days- He has such soul in his music- It will bring tears to your eyes.
Mike Watt & The Missingmen were up next and the place began to fill up- everyone had fun.
Fallujah 71 stepped up to the plate and rocked the house- The studio kept jumin with each band- DEFECTS rocked the stage, and gave out free t-shirts- John Ransom of the Smut Peddlers brought his new band "The Boners" and I have to say "I am impressed" keep it up guys- Entropy is better than ever, going strong for oner 30 years now- Steve Fortune came on board with The BillyBones and killed it hard! The energy was intense everyone loved the vibes! The climax was the one and only DECRY! Ferrel Holt on vocals and Justino's drums was a hard show to beat- the stage was rockin'
and that was Saturday's show-
Sunday was just as hot and exciting- Carlos opened, Duct Tape Hostage came up next, people were dancing having a great time- Don't No stepped up and Nick V. on drums rocked the riser so hard it was bending! Public Nuisance is an American hardcore punk band. Then we had Unglued step up and kept things tight when Louie Mayorga from suicidal tendencies, came onboard and played making it an ungluicidal crazy good!SORRY STATE was conceived when four friends came together sharing a common attitude, Dave Cee on vocals strong, you have to see this band!
Circle One's reputation, good or bad, has made an impact on So. Cal. punk rock. And Carnage Asada finished the show with a big bang!
