Well the first day of Spring in SE Texas fooled us all. We were down to 37 degrees last night. But Spring Time Blues is good news. Great time to huddle up with a good bowl of soup and listen to some blues! And that's kinda what I've been doing these past two days. Staying warm and being carried away to a different day when blues was only heard in the Missisippi Delta. Working songs with rhythm groans and moans that evolved into a guitar pickers or harp players paradise. A musical escape from the back breaking work in the cotton fields. The only thing that emanicapated them from their daily fight to survive in the harshest of times, if only for a brief moment. I can see an old man sitting on the porch with people walking by and starting to gather around him...and they listen. They hear the pain and toil and fears and hearthbreak of this man's life put to words with a couple of chords that laid down the soundtrack of our history. Listening to the old Delta Masters always makes me think. And this, this "Blues Sound" is our musical roots and can be heard in most modern day genres of music. It started with the blues and we continue to keep that alive today.
