Poets House is hosting the 9th Annual brevitas Festival of the Short Poem on Sunday November 11, 2012 from 2:30 – 5:30 pm.
Poet-members Jim Pignetti and Steve Zeitlin (founder of City Lore) launched brevitas by inviting a variety of dedicated poets to share original, short poems (14 lines max) with each other via email on the 1st and 15th of each month. Now ten years later, this community has grown to nearly 40 poets who offer individual, constructive feedback to each other’s works. This experiment has nurtured the collection of over 200 short poems for the anthology “2012 brevitas 9” that will be celebrated and given to everyone who attends the Festival. Poems will be projected and performed by each poet. Books will be signed. Literary antics will entertain. Laughter, pith and meaning will collide.
Poets in the audience will have an opportunity to sign-up for the Short Poem Open Mic (14 lines max) hosted by Bob Holman, international spoken-word poetry guru and founder of The Bowery Poetry Club).
Memorial tributes will honor our departed poet-members Iris Berman and Sue Machlin.
“Because of brevitas,” poet-member Richard Storm observed, “everything is a potential poem and everyone is a potential poet. Because of brevitas, poetry waits for me…. On the next block, around the corner, on every stranger’s face.”
brevitas members are a feisty mixture of well-known, emerging, and irrepressible artists and poets, including program hosts Angelo Verga (Spoken Word Curator for The Cornelia Street Café) and Flash Rosenberg (artist in residence for LIVE from the New York Public Library). Other poet-members include New Yorker poet Sparrow, Poet Laureate of Jones Street Sanford Fraser, Mobius editor Juanita Torrence-Thompson, First Literary Review-East editors Cindy Hochman and Karen Neuberg, co-founder of the William Carlos Williams Poetry Cooperative John J. Trause, along with a lively roster of accomplished wordsmiths including Dorothy Freidman August, Susan Gerardi Bello, Claudia Carlson, Patricia Carragon, Jan Garden Castro, Esther Cohen, Gil Fagiani, Christian Garaud, Leigh Harrison, Bob Heman, Eileen Hennessy, Evie Ivy, Judy Kamilhor, Andrew Kaufman, Maria Lisella, Tsaurah Litzky, Georgia Luna, James McMenamin, Katrinka Moore, Leslie Prosterman, Dorothea Hutton Scher, Zev Shanken, Ed Smith, Esther K. Smith, Nathan A. Versace, Carolyn Wells, and Jeffrey Cyphers Wright.

BIOS:
BRUCE WEBER’S NO CHANCE ENSEMBLE has been performing since the fall of 1996. Their pieces range from edgy, insightful dram-entary to moody psycho-rantasy covering topics from love, relationships, family and violence to nature, god, death, and spirituality. Members of the group featured in today’s performance are poets Bob Hart and Bruce Weber, and the fiction writer and painter Joanne Pagano Weber. The ensemble has been directed for the past several years by Joanne, and has performed regularly at venues in New York City and the surrounding area, including Dixon Place, the St. Marks Poetry Project, and HERE theatre.
Bruce Weber is the author of five published books of poetry, These Poems are Not Pretty (Miami: Palmetto Press, 1992), How the Poem Died (New York: Linear Arts, 1998), Poetic Justice (New York: Ikon Press, 2004), The First Time I Had Sex with T. S. Eliot (New York: Venom Press, 2004), and the just released The Break-up of My First Marriage (Rogue Scholars Press). Bruce’s work has appeared in numerous magazines, as well as in several anthologies, including Up is Up, But So Is Down: Downtown Writings, 1978-1992 (New York: New York University, 2006), and Riverine: An Anthology of Hudson Valley Writers (New Paltz, New York: Codhill Press, 2007). He has performed regularly in the tri-state area, both alone and with his performance group, Bruce Weber’s No Chance Ensemble, which has produced the CD Let’s Dine Like Jack Johnson Tonight (members.aol/com/ncensemble). He is the producer of the long running Alternative New Year’s Day Spoken Word/Performance Extravaganza. By day, Bruce is Senior Curator at the National Academy Museum, and splits his time between his homes in New York City and Saugerties, New York.
Joanne Pagano Weber is a writer of fiction who is also a visual artist and performer. Among other places her work has been published in Word Thursdays Anthology, Curare, and Breukelen Magazine, and performed on Let’s Dine Like Jack Johnson Tonight, a CD by The No Chance Ensemble, of which she is a member and director. She has performed at numerous venues in New York, including The Knitting Factory and Dixon Place with the ensemble, or as a featured writer.
Bob Hart took a poetry class in high school. Some time later his memory was wiped. Years afterward he found himself an old man with a fund of work written during years of his forgetfulness, work which he considers could be much improved by intelligence and imagination. He is the author of two books, and has been published in numerous magazines.

Joel Allegretti (www.joelallegretti.com) is the author of four collections of poetry: Europa/Nippon/New York: Poems/Not-Poems (Poets Wear Prada, 2012); Thrum (Poets Wear Prada, 2010); Father Silicon (The Poet’s Press, 2006), selected by The Kansas City Star as one of 100 Noteworthy Books of 2006, a list that included novels by Cormac McCarthy and Thomas Pynchon; and The Plague Psalms (The Poet’s Press, 2000). Allegretti’s poems have appeared in Smartish Pace, PANK, The New York Quarterly, Maintenant: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing & Art, MARGIE, Fulcrum and many other national journals, as well as in The Best American Poetry blog. He is represented in three new anthologies: Divining Divas (Lethe Press, 2012), alongside Mark Doty, David Trinidad, and Timothy Liu; Token Entry: New York City Subway Poems (Smalls Books, 2012), which includes work by Langston Hughes, Hart Crane, Alicia Ostriker, and Edward Hirsch; In the BLACK, In the RED (Helicon Nine, 2012), which includes poems by Dana Gioia, Brenda Hillman, Ted Kooser, and Philip Levine. Allegretti’s fiction has appeared in Think Journal, The Adroit Journal, autolycus: rogue literary journal and Petrichor Machine, among other periodicals. His Aqua: A Play in One Repeated Act was a semifinalist in the 2010 KNOCK International Play Contest. He wrote the texts for three song cycles by Frank Ezra Levy, whose symphonic work is released on Naxos American Classics. Allegretti is a member of the Academy of American Poets and ASCAP.
James Arthur’s first book of poems, Charms against Lightning, was published this past October by Copper Canyon Press, as a Lannan Literary Selection. Individual poems from Charms against Lightning have appeared in The New Yorker, The New Republic, Poetry, and The American Poetry Review. He has received the Amy Lowell Travelling Poetry Scholarship, a Wallace Stegner Fellowship, an Amy Clampitt Residency, and a Discovery/The Nation Prize. Copper Canyon's catalog describes Charms against Lightning, as "a poetic bildungsroman organized around the theme of awakening from a 'ghost world' in order to journey toward a definition of selfhood" and his poems as "romantic in spirit and contemporary in outlook ... rhythmical, elastic, and expressive." During the 2012-13 academic year, James will be a Hodder Fellow at the Lewis Center for the Arts in Princeton.

BIOS:
Leslie Prosterman has recently published her first poetry book, Snapshots and Dances, with Garden District Press (New Orleans, 2011). Her poetry has appeared in several collections and publications, including The Folklore Muse (Utah State University Press) and First Literary Review-East, and will be published in From Somewhere to Nowhere: The End of the American Dream (forthcoming, Spring 2013). She has been a featured reader/performer at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, West Tisbury Library, at the George Mason University Fall for the Book Festival, and at Nora Laudani’s Vaudeville Nights in Vineyard Haven. In December the Erika Thimey Dance and Theater Company will present a dance concert created around Snapshots and Dances, at which Prosterman will also perform and read. A cultural activist in the conservation of grassroots culture and civil society, she is also a sometime student of trapeze. It is probably also evident that in a former life she was an academic, but that will pass.
Nathan A. Versace was born in Rochester, New York and spent his childhood surrounded by cows. In his Senior Year in high school, he ran a campaign of distortion and lies and won as Student Senate Chairman. He attended SUNY Geneseo where he was Editor of the school literary journal, The Experimentalist, a publication that he dedicated to avoiding the truth at all cost. His first published poem was about a large breasted woman in Volition based in San Francisco in 1984. His poetry and prose has since been published in about 50 publications nationwide including New York Press and New York Newsday. Wrote a column for Downtown/The Aquarian on East Village life called The Downtown Diaries from 1994-1997. While driving a cab in 1992, he met Norman Mailer who later granted him an interview a few months before his death. He is currently an employee of The Brooklyn Eagle where he contributes words, photography, and advertising dollars. He has an easy life, can afford to take the subway at will.

Bios:
Richard Levine is author of That Country’s Soul, A Language Full of Wars and Songs, Snapshots from a Battle, and most recently, A Tide of a Hundred Mountains (Bright Hill Press, 2012). A poem from the book, In a Blue Wood, was an Academy of American Poets Poem-a-Day feature during National Poetry month. In 2011, his poem “Believe This” was featured in former Poet Laureate Ted Kosser’s column, “American Life in Poetry”. A retired teacher, he spends most days working to block hydro-fracking in New York State.
Michael T. Young has published three collections of poetry: Transcriptions of Daylight, Because the Wind Has Questions and Living in the Counterpoint. His next full-length collection, The Beautiful Moment of Being Lost, will be published in 2013 by Black Coffee Press. He received a fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and a William Stafford Award. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in numerous journals including Fogged Clarity, Iodine Poetry Journal, The Potomac Review, The Raintown Review, and The Same. His work is forthcoming in the anthologies The Bug Book and In the Black/In the Red.
