My Review for Susan Maurer’s Maerchen in the June Issue of Gently Read Literature

Maerchen, Susan H. Maurer, Maverick Duck Press, 2008

Mythology, colored by Druid shamans, inspired Susan H. Maurer to document her poetic journey, Maerchen. Like a Celtic design, Maurer’s thirteen poems weave the past into the 21st Century. Her fascination with Celtic history began in the basement of the Jefferson Market Library in Greenwich Village, New York, where she read about the Celts and Druids in The Encyclopedia of Religion. Although the facts of this edition of The Encyclopedia of Religion were questionable according to a revised edition, learning about the myths and poetic traditions sent Maurer on her Celtic quest. Elizabeth Harrington has a Ph.D. in psychology and works at a market research firm in New York. She grew up in Oklahoma, which is the emotional and physical setting for much of her poetry. Her poems have appeared in several journals, including: The Hudson Review, Field, Nimrod, The Sun, Rattapallax, The Paterson Review, and The Spoon River Poetry Review. She was a winner of the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Award (granted by The Poetry Project, Passaic Community College), first runner-up in the dA Center for the Arts Poetry Prize, and a finalist in Comstock Review's Muriel Craft Bailey Award, and in The Ledge and Grayson Books poetry chapbook contests. She is included in an anthology of poems about divorce ("Split Verse: Poems to Heal the Heart").

Mindy Levokove is a multi-media performance artist who uses dance, music, costumes, vocalization, video, and spoken word. She enjoys working with people of varied backgrounds, abilities, and interests. She particularly enjoys working with diverse populations. Her fascination with dance reflects the environment and she is partial to tribal, ritual, and expressionistic type of performance, relying heavily on ethnic forms for style and structure. Mindy particularly loves to improvise and perform with folks who want to try something "new.” She hosts a reading series at the Community Garden at 6th Street and Avenue B in the East Village. Mindy’s web site is: http://web.me.com/mlevokove/Mindy_Levokove/Welcome.html

Born in Philadelphia, but raised mostly in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, RL began writing at the age of 13. During his youth, RL was highly influenced by his former pastor, the late Ernestine M. Shivers. RL’s life changed the night he met Ebony Washington, the host of Thursday spoken word at Kay's Kafe, in the Bronx. RL made his name at The Sugar Shack, Hottest Poets, Sankofa & The Nuyorican Poets Cafe. RL began hosting The Big Mouth Bout, a one-on-one slam featuring the top poets in the NYC area. Cheyenne Roadhouse became RL's weekly stomping ground to build his talent as host and poet. For 2 successful years RL and Kool Breeze became a household name in the apex of poetry with their back and forth verbal joustings, as well as the growth of the BMB's which soon began spreading from the Roadhouse to The Bowery Poetry Club & CBGB's. In September 2005, RL began hosting his own spoken word night, “RL's Lyric Lounge.” RL worked out of Iimani Cafe in Bed Stuy. His early features included Ngoma, Kasim Allah, Harlem 125 & ItsReaLight. He moved his series to Food 4 Thought Cafe. There, along with assistance by Kool Breeze & his best friend Tanya Arnold, RL kept the Lyric Lounge as a full force in the spoken word community. Mixing his strong, Christian beliefs with the love for the arts, he has always believed everyone deserves their chance to be heard. Because of his being influenced by Langston Hughes, his abstract form of writing dares to paint a picture of life from different angles. He was always taught by Kool Breeze to look at the ''bigger picture.'' RL gets you to do just that.

The Brownstone Poets Anthology is Here!

The Brownstone Poets 2011 Anthology is Here!

A labor of love brought together with the help of my team of assistant editors, Cindy Hochman, Brenda J. Gannam, and Karen Neuberg. Kudos to all three! Without their help and guidance, this anthology would not have been possible.

Copies will be sold at the readings for $6.

Stay tuned for the Annual Brownstone Poets Anthology Reading, hopefully, to be held in September. Details to come . . .

Will bring copies to Poets House for the Annual Showcase. Details to come . . .

Congrats to the contributors (the features from last year and the poets who came to support the Brownstone Poets venues), who will be getting their comp copy:
