Susan Kolodny’s poems appear in New England Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Marlboro Review, River Styx, Calyx, and in other journals and several anthologies. A psychoanalyst in practice in the Bay Area, she specializes in work with artists and writers, and is the author of The Captive Muse: On Creativity and Its Inhibition (PsychoSocial Press, 2000). She founded and chairs an event series called Poetry & Psychoanalysis at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis where she is on the faculty. Her first poetry collection, After the Firestorm, was published last November by Mayapple Press.

Puma Perl is a performance artist and a widely published poet and writer. She is the author of two chapbooks; the award-winning Belinda and Her Friends and the recently published Ruby True, and full-length collection knuckle tattoos. She is the co-creator, co-producer, and main curator of DDAY Productions, which currently puts on shows at many venues.

New Third Tuesday Venue

New 3rd Tuesday Venue

Hello Poets and Friends,

Thanks to Bernard and Diane Block, the Brownstone Poets Reading Series has a new 3rd Tuesday venue, starting July 17 in Park Slope with featured poets, Susan Kolodny and Puma Perl.

This lovely venue is Cafe Dada, a French-Hungarian restaurant where the old Ozzie's used to be. Murat Ozcan of Cafe Couleur adds old world charm to Park Slope. The cafe combines old and new furnishings, making one feel right at home. This is certainly a place for those in the arts. Chef and Manager Carl Alioto provides an exquisite menu of delectable food. I know that the chocolate almond pastry and the quiche are delectable. There's a wine bar and the coffee is excellent.

* Unfortunately, due to increased costs in running my reading series (producing the anthologies, Internet usage, flyers, bio sheets, etc.), the suggested donation will be $4 starting July 17.

The Brownstone Poets is proud to have its annual anthology event at BookCourt on Sunday, June 24 at 7 p.m. Rain or shine, this is a celebration for sixty-one diverse poets (featured poets from 2011 or poets who had frequently attended the Brownstone Poets reading series during 2011, plus a guest poet). All scheduled anthology contributors are reading from the anthology. Admission is free. This reading will not include an Open Mic.

Sadly, two contributors have recently passed away:

Brant Lyon – May 12

Their poems in the Brownstone Poets 2012 Anthology will be heard and cherished. Their poetry was a vital part of the Brownstone Poets community. We will not forget our friends. Their poetry will live on.

Brant Lyon’s “FOREVER DADA,” will be read by Patricia Carragon

Iris Berman’s “RUNNING SCARED,” will be read by Cynthia Toronto

The Brownstone Poets 2012 Anthology will sell for $8 at BookCourt. All anthology contributors will get their complimentary copy at the reading if they haven’t already received one.

George Wallace, the Brownstone Poets’ first Guest Poet, is coming to read at BookCourt:

George Wallace is a regular on the NYC poetry scene, who tours the US and Europe to read, lecture, and conduct workshops. Writer in Residence at the Walt Whitman Birthplace, he’s author of 22 chapbooks in the US, UK, Italy, and Greece. Recent appearances: US: Woody Guthrie Festival (Okemah, OK); Mabel Dodge Luhan House (Taos, NM); Church of Beethoven (Albuquerque, NM); Beyond Baroque (Los Angeles, CA); the John Steinbeck Center (Salinas, CA); Beat Museum (San Francisco, CA); and Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Festival (Lowell, MA). BookCourt is a charming independent bookstore dedicated to serving the Cobble Hill community and surrounding Brooklyn areas with friendly service that’s both kid and adult-friendly. This bookstore provides a wide selection of books to attract any bibliophile, as well as the Barnes and Noble aficionados. Books from local authors are welcomed at BookCourt and find homes on its shelves.

The Brownstone Poets, a Brooklyn-based literary series, is generally held twice a month. It’s an Open-Mic with usually two featured readers. Patricia Carragon, the host and curator, is the editor-in-chief and publisher of the annual anthology. Her assistant editors are Cindy Hochman, Brenda J. Gannam, and Karen Neuberg. Ms. Carragon began this reading series back in 2005 with Evie Ivy, who was her co-hostess.

Changes for The Brownstone Poets

Changes for the Brownstone Poets Reading Series

The Brownstone Poets are still in operation at the Park Plaza Restaurant in Brooklyn Heights for the First Saturday readings. I will be taking July off, but will be back Saturday, August 4. Due to increasing operation costs in running the series and publishing the annual anthology, I must raise the $3 suggested admission fee to $4. In order to cut costs, as well as Going Green, I am eliminating the bio sheets handed out at the readings.

I am sorry to announce that the Linger Cafe and Lounge is now closed after three years of serving the Boerum Hill community with its unique flavor and service. Thank you Jessica Pichardo for providing a beautiful home for the spoken word, art, and music. Please click on the link below for Jessica's moving message:

http://lingercafelounge.com/

All Third Tuesday readings are on hold until further notice. I am presently searching and sending out queries for a new Third Tuesday home. I doubt if I will find another venue soon enough for the June reading.

My apologies to all my featured readers who were to be reading at the Linger Cafe and Lounge:

June 19, 2012: Al Ortolani and Vincent Quatroche

July 17, 2012: Susan Kolodny and Puma Perl

August 21, 2012: Susan Maurer and David Messineo

September 18, 2012: Amber Atiya, Stephen Bluestone and Robert Gibbons

October 16, 2012: Jack Cooper and Mindy Matijasevic

November 20, 2012: Richard Levine and Michael T. Young

January 15. 2013: Joel Allegretti and James Arthur

I will try to reschedule if necessary.

In the meantime, I will alert everyone once I establish a new Tuesday venue or if I have to cancel scheduled readings.

The First Saturday series is on Holiday Hiatus for July and will return Saturday, August 4 with the Red Barrow Poets John Barrale, Zorida Mohamed, and Tony Puma at Park Plaza Restaurant.

Sad News from the Poetry Community

Sad News from the Poetry Community

Two poet friends and vital contributors to the Brownstone Poets Anthologies are no longer with us:

Brant Lyon on May 12 (my birthday). He died suddenly that morning.

Iris Berman on June 1. She has battled lung cancer for several years.

I am still in shock and disbelief that both Brant and Iris have passed away. The poetry community will not be the same, although their poetry will live on. Their poems in the Brownstone Poets 2012 Anthology will be honored at the Annual Brownstone Poets Anthology Reading at BookCourt on Sunday, June 24 at 7 p.m.

Bookcourt 163 Court Street Cobble Hill, Brooklyn 11201

Right now, I only have memorial information for Brant. I will keep you posted on the upcoming Hydrogen Jukebox Show on Thursday, June 28. Regarding Iris Berman, as soon as I hear about the memorial arrangements from Cynthia Toronto, I will let you know.

For donations in Brant Lyon's memory, please send to the following organizations:

https://www.facebook.com/events/246672205433721/

From Three Rooms Press: BRANT LYON MEMORIAL Bowery Poetry Club Saturday, June 9, 3-5:30 p.m. Our heart is heavy with the loss of Brant Lyon, who passed away suddenly on May 12. Brant was a vital, caring, creative, and enthusiastic poet, musician, producer and publisher. He was co-founder of the New York independent press great weather for MEDIA; author of the book “You Are White Inside," a full length collection of his poetry; and producer of the popular series Hydrogen Jukebox, at which poets read their work to live improvised music. He recently recorded and produced the cd "Brain Ampin," which included tracks by Hydrogen Jukebox regulars. His passing has left a great hole in the lives of friends worldwide.

To celebrate his life, a memorial for Brant Lyon will be held at Bowery Poetry Club on Saturday, June 9, from 3-5 p.m. The event will feature several scheduled speakers discussing Brant's impact on their lives (no open reading). Please come to pay your respects to Brant.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Center (http://www.gaycenter.org/support) or to PEN (http://www.pen.org/).
