The Benefits of Reading a Health Blog for Specific Health Conditions

A health blog is a type of personal online journal used to write about specific medical issues, events and/or other health-related content. These blogs are created for various purposes, including influencing, criticising, informing and/or entertaining. They often include research and opinions, which are added to the general wealth of information in the health industry.

Medical blogs are influential sources of information for patients and their families, but little is known about how they affect readers’ intentions to take future prevenative health actions. This study aimed to fill this gap by comparing the effects of 3 different medical blog types: a personal narrative, a more general cancer story and a statistics condition (that incorporated data and statistics about melanoma).

Results indicated that all blogs significantly increased readers’ intentions to take future preventative health action. However, the more personal blog and the statistics-oriented blog were more effective than the control story at increasing intended skin check frequency. Interestingly, the statistical blog was also more effective at decreasing perceived barriers to and severity of a disease, but not perceived susceptibility.

Although much of the literature on medical blogs focuses on how they enhance medical education, studies on their readers have been rare. However, health blogs are an increasingly important source of information for patients and may have a significant impact on their behaviour.

Different types of health blogs exist for different purposes and audiences. Some are primarily research-based and focus on specific diseases or disorders. Others are mainly informational and focus on aspects of healthy living, such as exercise or mental health. A few health blogs are shopping sites where the blog author aims to promote products and services.

Across 3 studies with different experimental scenario-based designs and 1 qualitative study of real blog readers, we found that reading patient blogs increased people’s intentions to take future preventative health actions (objective 1). The type of blog significantly impacted this relationship, with personal narrative blogs being most effective in Study 1, and statistical blogs being most effective in Study 2. The results also showed that the perceived risk and beliefs of people influenced their intentions after reading a particular blog but did not mediate these effects.
