I had another great conversation with my mother Ana Chaluisan today (seen here with my Aunt Edu who always emphasized education and responsibility while I grew up.)
Soon she will be 83 and her mind is sharp as a tack. Her life is about being in the moment and curiosity to always learn something new. And for this I am grateful because I believe she genetically passed on to me the DNA to be a reporter. I shared about the success we have had on Reverbnation and then shared how studying the multitude of diverse music I'm coming across via Reverb has personally established my FB site(s)/social network as the assignment desks to launch in depth coverage of what is happening out there in the treble clef universe.
Funny how life repeats itself. I got my feet wet in college radio, went professional with Latin NY and then went mainstream with CBS. Along the way I went professional playing live based on the music lessons funded by by her and my dad. I thought I was retired from all that but given the Radio show on WBGU FM, the reuniting with Mr Salsa Izzy Sanabria (salsamagazine.com), academic activity at BGSU and now the proposed TV show produced by CVP Productions, I have been closely studying music again to provide material for the magazine, the radio show and reconnecting with my television associates across the country. Given that my time is my time (my pension sees to that) I foresee a year of exciting adventure. My goal is to have my doctorate before she passes on to the next 'guaracha' in the sky. And in the bigger picture to accurately report what the new generation of Latino Artists are doing in America without having to have anyone pay my bills by dipping into their pockets as so many "Lords of Culture" in NYC do in their dealings with the industry. It was this type of honesty I learned from folks such as Gerry Brooks, Randall Pinkston and my college friend Gary Lee (all seasoned media-men.)
When I originally worked at WBGU TV in the early eighties as a producer (during a break after my junior year at Amherst College) I felt I received the academic equivalent of a four year degree. That (coupled with all the subsequent experiences across the country at a number of television, radio and newspaper jobs) is now coming in handy in organizing the wealth of information I have come across. And this, my friends, is the ultimate payoff; to create the doctoral dissertation I have proposed: Latino pop culture from the late 19th century to the present age of new media. I have discovered that I have connections to 500 bands in NW Ohio via my Reverbnation page (with 100 in the immediate area of Toledo/Bowling Green.) In addition I have access to several hundred Latino bands in different genres across the country. I am dedicating the rest of the week to ensure that we are fully networked via FB/Twitter/Soundcloud/Yahoo groups/ et al with these musicians on account of the proposed CVP Productions (Thomas Martinez-Michael Michael T Best) project to create a Planet Lovetron interview-performance show featuring NW Ohio Talent. "I just do what I feel in my heart and you'll see it on stage and hear it in my tone. Feeling is the most important part of my process as an artist. The music can be great, you can look great, the words can have rhythm and style but if there is no feeling or emotion then the audience has nothing to grab on to. Music is about connecting with people on another level and sharing your experience or feeling to another through song. It's very powerful stuff if you understand it and use it the right way."
Loco Mic mixes his Raw Street attitude and experience with a message of learning how to over come hard times through hard work and belief in your dreams.
