I fully entered the world of Latin Music in 1977. Earlier in the year I had met Mr Salsa Izzy Sanabria (January 1977). In May 1977 I encountered Play wright Ed Bullins (one of my professors at Amherst College and Black Panther Minister of Culture) at the #2 Gun Hill Road Station. He happened to own a house on 213th Street - one block from our home on Tilden Street. He asked me to join him to meet Joe Papp at the Public Theater who gave me a job that day in the emerging Playwrights office where I met Garret Morris accompanied by Howard Johnson (the acclaimed Tuba Player and whom I had interviewed in February 1977 on the original Espiritu Salsa show broadcast by WAMH FM Amherst Massachusetts.) Howard was going to appear on SNL that week and Garret gave me two passes inviting me backstage after the show. It was there that I met Orestes Vilato, Jerry Gonzalez and Nelson Gonzalez for the first time. Santana was the first Latino musician to headline SNL. But what Orestes Vilato, Jerry Gonzalez (brother of Andy Gonzalez) and Nelson Gonzalez brought to the percussion mix backing Kenny Vance was pure Salsa/Mozambique.

The goal of the show is to promote the performing talent in NW Ohio. The local area, he said, has as much talent as other areas like Ann Arbor. "It's just not as hyped, not as commercialized." He's working with the California Production team C.V.P.Productions and producers Thomas Martinez, formerly of Bowling Green and Michael T. Best. He said he wants to bring a taste of all genres including rock, hip hop and jazz. In addition to local talent, Chaluisan will draw on his ties with Salsa Magazine to include video from international Salsa Performers.
