Featured in Amherst College Spring 2014 Issue

Great Surprise today in the mail. Received Amherst College Spring 2014 Alumni Issue and discovered that the Mike Tapp MNN Time Warner Cable Documentary on my Career "Rocker Roller Rican" plus my Off Broadway Play "Spic Chic" and published work/broadcast history were acknowledged in one fell swoop. It is the first time that my Alma Mater Amherst College has taken notice of my accomplishments since I graduated in 1986 with Christine R Cain '86 and attended school with Edwin Camacho '79.

Special Mother's Day Presentation Salsa Magazine 6,451 members (85 new) “Luis Chaluisan is a born storyteller. His gift for capturing the heart and soul of each character he portrays is not only convincing, but also inspiring. His latest collection of solo portraits is titled "Spic Chic," and has been touring various venues around town. It made its latest stop at the Nuyorican Poets Café, where the performance was rousingly received, before moving on to stops at Raw Space and a possible move out West. The show is full of humor, insight, poetry, and Puerto Rican pride. Chaluisan's smooth-talking narrator introduces the various vignettes with articulate wit and wisdom. One is a heartfelt homage to the original poets of the Nuyorican venue. Chaluisan then tells about a wild day at Amherst College filled with tales of drug-dealing and terrorist acts. He later recalls a confrontation involving a television reporter and the Ku Klux Klan. His unique voice as a writer clearly displays his poetic influences” Elias Stimac - Backstage

Heroin and Wood County Rock Scene

One of the major problems in the Wood County Rock and Roll Music scene is the abuse of opiates (see heroin) by a small clique of thug wanna be rock stars. The list of convicted felons imposing themselves on local venues numbers approximately a half dozen. They are not only involved in alleged dealing and suspected gun running but have been allegedly involved in ripping off other groups door money and reported physical attacks. Bowling Green police and sheriff's department are had on the case on rooting out these individuals who are marring the quality of life in the city. The BG Sentinel Tribune has stepped up to the plate with a two part expose that in essence supports driving both addicts and dealers out of Town. (BG FRONT PAGE SERIES PART 1) It’s an addiction that doesn’t discriminate among race, age or socioeconomic level. It can spread its fingers into a variety of crimes. And like the rest of the United States, Wood County is not immune. Nationwide, the country is seeing a resurgence in heroin, a drug that found an eager audience in the 1990s but had largely faded away in the years since. Now, it’s back in a big way. Across the country, heroin use has been climbing steadily since 2007 among persons 12 or older, according to a government study. The drug is processed from morphine, which itself comes from poppy plants. It can be snorted, smoked or injected, depending on the kind of heroin and its relative purity. Bowling Green police saw a dramatic spike in heroin issues last year. http://www.sent-trib.com/front-page/hooked-on-heroin

(BG FRONT PAGE SERIES PART 2) While the abuse of heroin and its dark, outlying effects — crime and overdoses — are on the rise, so are efforts to fight back against the addiction with treatment efforts and legislation. “It’s a community problem. It’s become a huge community health problem,” said Thomas Clemons, executive director of the Wood County Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Services Board (ADAMHS). Sandi Carsey, children’s services unit administrator with Wood County Job and Family Services, said the increasingly pervasive problem doesn’t just impact individual users, but also families. “There’s been an increase in our reports of heroin or opiate use,” she said. “We have had several parents die as a result of heroin use, leaving children without a parent. We’ve also had many overdoses. And that affects the children as well, because parents can’t take care of them and somebody else has to, then.” http://www.sent-trib.com/front-page/heroin-widespread-in-state

Salsa Magazine Female Subscribers are among the highest intellectually

Analysis by Latino Media Marketing shows Salsa Magazine Female Subscribers are among the highest intellectually gifted people on FB. https://www.facebook.com/groups/salsamagazine/ In an effort to provide better profiles for the identification of all gifted Latina women, current research suggests use of both qualitative measures and quantitative instruments, such as achievement and intelligence tests (Garcia, 1994). Early in the 1980s, a national panel of experts recommended use of several instruments when assessing Women from the Latino population, including culturally and linguistically diverse students (Richert, Alvino, & McDonnel, 1982). Some of the instruments they recommended have remained in use, including Progressive Matrices, Standard (Raven, 1960); SOI Screening Form for Gifted (Meeker & Meeker, 1975); System of Multicultural Pluralistic Assessment (Mercer & Lewis, 1978); Culture Fair Intelligence Test, Scale 1 (Cattell & Cattell, 1950). Spanish language instruments this author has found useful for measuring academic achievement include Aprenda: La Prueba de Logros en Espanol, Intermediate 2 (Psychological Corporation, 1990); Bateria Woodcock Psico-Educativa en Espanol (Woodcock, 1982); Spanish Assessment of Basic Education, Second Edition, Level 2 (Hampton-Brown Company, 1991); and La Prueba Riverside de Realizacion en Espanol (Cote, 1984). For more information about these instruments and others, readers can refer to the on-line searchable ERIC/AE Test Locator at on the Internet. Other new instruments are being developed, including one specifically designed to identify gifted bilingual Hispanic students. — with Maria Hernandez and Tina Chaluisan.

Rocker Roller Rican Documentary Written Up in Sentinel-Tribune

New film tells Luis Chaluisan's story http://newsle.com/article/0/141121116/ Written by DAVID DUPONT Sentinel Arts & Entertainment Editor Thursday, 17 April 2014 10:50 Luis Chaluisan has become a familiar figure in downtown Bowling Green. Not that anyone would ever think he's from here. He was born in Puerto Rico in 1957 and raised in the North Bronx where his family moved when he was 7, and his voice has the quick, colorful clip that betrays his upbringing. A new documentary "Rocker Roller Rican" out on DVD tells about his life and its intersection with the emerging Nuyorican culture in the 1970s and 1980s in New York. "Rocker Roller Rican" will be screened at the Connection Center during art walk throughout the afternoon on April 26 at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. in downtown Bowling Green. It'll also be screened by WBGU-PBS, where Chaluisan worked in the 1980s, in May. The hour-long film traces Chaluisan's ancestry back to the Basque region in Europe, through Haiti to Puerto Rico until he arrived at age 7 in the North Bronx in New York City. It brings together clips both of his performances under the name El Extreme, as well as family snapshots and footage of some of his influences to paint a portrait both of Chaluisan and the vibrant culture of his time. But it was not all poetry, song and dance. "I survived the crack wars," Chaluisan said. He carried a .45 revolver. Finally he was busted, and a detective who he knew from school offered him a deal: If he disappeared, the charges would disappear. At that point he went down to Puerto Rico. Just another stop in what Chaluisan calls his own journey of self-discovery. It involves graduating from one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country, Amherst College in Massachusetts, but not after being asked to leave on a couple occasions, eventually getting his degree a dozen years after he first enrolled. It involved a career in broadcasting where he worked with budding stars Geraldo Rivera and Bill O'Reilly. It involved a stay in the 1980s in Bowling Green, working for WBGU-PBS, and playing rock and roll with Little Otis and The Upsetters as the house band at Milton's. And it involved a stay in a state mental institution in New York City. The only person, he said, who visited him when he was there was Maria Hernandez, someone who studied and worked with him. Hernandez and producer Mike Tapp are responsible for the film. All through that time, he struggled with mental illness. As a teenager he started hearing voices. Chaluisan sang. He painted."You could feel a lot of what was happening to me in the paintings." He started writing. The voices became the voices and imagery for his poems. He danced. "Anything I could do to expend the energy," he said. "Rocker Roller Rican" opens with a film of him dancing while a student at Amherst College in 1975. All of it came together in the play "Spic (for Spanish People In Charge) Chic," which played in New York City and Germany. It took him years before a psychiatrist in Puerto Rico finally prescribed the right medication to control his symptoms. And now, he said, three years after moving back to Northwest Ohio, he feels he's found a home. His most recent visit back to New York City convinced him he could never return. The pace is too frantic for him now. "I'm no longer built for that." He considered moving back to his native Puerto Rico, but the island, he said, has become too violent. So he's at home in downtown Bowling Green. Chaluisan finds support at the Connection Center, so that's where he wanted to screen "Rocker Roller Rican." He's also pleased that the film will be broadcast in New York in June shown in Puerto Rico, and other places he's called home.

What we have discovered is that the greatest concern among "Salsa Magazine" members is managing the amount of information you receive. Our members are inundated with information, from our coalition and thousands of other sources. So the challenge for us is making sure that we are communicating just the right amount and type of information to our members. And how do we do that? With data. The promise of good data management is that we can communicate with our members in a way that is highly relevant and highly valuable to them. We do this by understanding who you are, what your interests and needs are, and how you like to consume information. This means collecting and analyzing key data about our members, such as how long you’ve been a member, what your areas of interest and speciality are, how you are consuming information from us (e.g., via the web, via email, via Twitter, ReveerbNation via print), and what content we have that may be relevant to you. Managing all of this information can be tricky. It requires good technology and also good processes. Once we started targeting our communications to members (i.e., sending you what is relevant to you), we have seen an appreciation of the value we are providing. El Extreme Luis Chaluisan
