"Exposition of New Music 2010 - Brno" in the Czech TV

Czech Television documentary in the ”MUSICA TERRA” program about the ”EXPOSITION OF NEW MUSIC 2010 - 23RD YEAR” IN BRNO (from 7th to 11th March) with HILARY JEFFERY, ABSTRACT MONARCHY DUO (FRANZ HAUTZINGER & ZSOLT SŐRÉS - AHAD), NICOLAS COLLINS, DAVID TOOP, ZSOLT NAGY (conductor of the JANÁČKŮV AKADEMICKÝ ORCHESTR) and VALENTYN SILVESTROV. Excerpt from the festival bulletin: ”This year's program reflects the wide variability of musical space, without pandering to the masses, or following uniformity. Today this space has become a natural environment for a wide range of creative approaches. This allows juxtaposition of classic works of music of the late 20th century - America's Morton Feldman and John Cage, the Ukraine's Valentyn Silvestrov, famous British music journalist and experimenter David Toop, mysterious sound objects from DAMA DAMA's leader Dan Dlouhý, or music in real time, developed by the American trombonist Nicolas Collins, Dutchman Hilary Jeffery and the Austro-Hungarian Abstract Monarchy Duo. The absence of integrated subject matter for this music festival does not mean the theme is missing. The theme is the music itself and its variety of forms.” Enjoy the 26-min long video! And Musica Terra program starts with a 25-sec McDonald's commercial, of course, heh... http://www.ceskatelevize.cz/ivysilani/310295350110006-terra-musica/

Ahad's Masters Garden V.: Holy Ghosts in the Machine – In memoriam Ernő Király

Zsolt Sőrés aka Ahad plays on cassette recorder, CD-player, Korg DS-10, Korg KP-1, Boss GX-700. Track recorded at home on 26th January, 2010 by Ahad.

Duration: 4' 54”

In 1998 the two Hungarian experimental musicians, the members of the s.k.y duo, Zsolt Kovács (guitar, electronics) and Zsolt Sőrés aka Ahad (viola, home-made sonic objects, electronics) asked Ernő Király (home-made ziterphone and tablophone) the legendary avant-garde composer and pioneer improviser in Serbia in order for a trio to be created, that they played Király's works written onto this trio. The recently discovered archive live concert sound recording that was the starting point of the piece Holy Ghosts in the Machine was taken on one of the stations of the s.k.y + Ernő Király trio's European tour, in Brno, Czech Republic on 9th November, 1999 at the underground music club Skleněná Louka (Glass Meadow). The performance were recorded on analogue tape by a vintage magnetophon tape recorder by David Šubík. There are few and short live manipulated sound samples in Holy Ghosts in the Machine apart from the previous work by Ahad entitled Ahad's Masters Garden II.: Songs from the Lotus Island – A Prelude for a Collective Ayahuasca Healing /Hommage à Alejandro Jodorowsky/. (From the fourth chapter of this work: Les Technopères /Anarchopsychotiques/.)

*** The work of composer and ethnomusicologist, ”the Hungarian Harry Partch” Ernő Király (1919, Subotica, Serb-Croatian-Slovenian Kingdom – 2007, Novi Sad, Serbia) can be described as simple, radical and surrealist including raw modernity, archaic and avant-garde approach. His creative method has more in common with the American avant-garde (improvisation, instrument building, composer-performer, multi-instrumentalism) than with dogmatically rigid European compositional practice. The decisive factor in his career was ethnomusicology, which he began in the fifties, collecting the vocal and instrumental music of the people of the Voivodina region (Hungarians, Serbs, Croats, Slovaks, Gypsies) as well as their folk instruments: zithers, drums, flutes and fifes. One of his home-mades, the zitherphone was invented and constructed in 1974 by Király himself, based on the Hungarian folk instrument, the zither. It consists of five zithers of varying sizes, incorporated into a single body (there exists also a version with four zithers). There are 58 strings in it, which are built in on the basis of the A-pentatonic / la-pentatonic scale (A, C, D, E, G). In certain places the struts are placed at a distance of a quarter tone. Its range exceeds five octaves (E1 – gis3), and it can be played on by fingers, by a plectrum, a bow and various other objects. If necessary, two persons can play on it at the same time. In this way a polyphonic playing is achievable. The natural strength of the sound is the same as that of the guitar. In order strengthen the sound of the instrument. Király has placed 16 pick-ups into it. In that way one gets the double strength of its original tune.
